Your truck was totaled for that? It seems like it would need a tank, pump, lines, injectors/rails. I doubt this substance would pass the injectors. What was it? Sugar, salt, grinding/cutting swarf?
That seems like a big swing by the insurance company over what is a few thousand dollars in components. I think if that were my truck, I would buy it back from the insurance company, R and R the fuel system and resell it.

OP, before you mount that new cap, make sure it's legit. Most seem to be counterfeit. O'Reilly Auto has the real one. It's the 10504 as you know but it needs to have the Stant "S" embossed on the handle on one end and it "should" have a completely metal key.

I, and many, many other bought on Amazon and ALL had the problem of constant CEL's. There's a whole thread on the subject but it seems those 2 factors I mentioned above are the telltale for the real thing.

Yes they totaled it. Had 13k miles on it. The Techs couldn't figure out what the substance was but they sent me pics of the cylinders, pistons etc. It was a mess. I thought about buying it back but I don't have the garage space, time etc to rebuild the whole thing.

    basically I'm just curious

I'm thinking a highly corrosive substance was used, water is not supposed to get through the sock

Still though an entire new engine, complete fuel system from top to bottom, and the time needed to install would still be less than the whole truck Id think.

I mean Im not arguing with you, it seems like this situation worked out very well for you  You know you wont have any little issues popping up down the road. Im just very surprised any insurance co would do that.

Edit: looking over it again the first piston doesnt look like it came from the same engine as the second, in my uneducated opinion. Thats a ton of buildup

I would think it would be worth sending some of those components out to a lab to test the byproduct of whatever the hell that was in the cylinders as well as maybe what was trapped in filters and fuel pump. Maybe it would isolate some element, perhaps an unusual one, that might implicate somebody. Getting all "Quincy" here but it sure would be interesting to know.

For some reason the thought of Portland Cement popped into my mind. We saw a potential Sugar infiltration here just a few weeks back and how that reacted but I wonder if cement would mix into solution enough to do something so heinous to a motor? It is incredibly fine particulate.

All interesting points. I truthfully had no say in how the insurance company handled it. But I do know now I get to shop for a new truck

Which leads me back to my original question of whether it's doable to get a custom fuel door lock like the older Tacoma's. I probably should just take it to a few custom body shops and just ask.

I like that. That's what I'm thinking of doing. Or just something simple like fuel door lock with a key.
