I definitely think it is easier and better to have 2 dogs. They keep each other occupied, and their isn't so much of a problem with separation anxiety. I have 5 dogs, and they act as a pack. Now, they are all 3 and under, and some are litter mates. But, they fall in line and all are well socialized. The con at first is that since they are all so close in age, we had a lot of puppies. The first year is the most expensive (spay/neuter/vaccines/microchip etc.) The last one Kabam (husky) just turned 1, so now all of the first year bills are over.

In general, I think if you have the time and can afford the care, get the 2nd dog. It is great for the animals and is great for you too. :)

When we got our second dog this happened. It took six months or more to get the first to stop. He still would do it occasionally even a year or two later. It seemed to completely stop when we moved houses. Just our experience.

I wouldn't let it stop me from getting a second pet though. The carpet was going to be worn out at some point either way. :)

I've got two now... never wanted to be "dog-less" when the older one goes. There is an almost 6 year age gap in my two. The older one helped teach the younger one, some of the house rules, walk rules, etc. There is no domination problem, since I'M the alpha!! The younger dog thought she was boss her first night at home. She quickly learned that she's not the "boss".

I have 2 now also, my boy is just over 1yr old and I got him as a puppy, my girl is 2yrs old and I got her as a rescue 6 months ago. Both are Boston Terriers, high activity and energy levels! They do entertain and occupy each other when we aren't able to, but we play with them both a lot too. Mine are spoiled, so the only down side of having 2 is the costs, but I don't mind that one bit. I love having 2 of them, I got 2 close in age and activity level so they could keep up with each other and us. Both of mine get along great and they learn from each other.

I have two Golden Retrievers, a male and a female.
The female was abandoned in the desert as a pup, and became very protective and territorial with other animals. She prefers to pull when we walk, and goes off like a bomb whenever we see another dog. I have to put her on her back to get her to realize I don't need protecting.
The male is one of those rare "timid" Goldens... shies from everything and everyone. Took him three weeks to accept me when I brought him home.

So walks are an arm-stretching exercise with one running INTO trouble and one running away. I typically don't have time to do separate walks to try to change either behavior.

Even so, we love them both dearly and would never give up on either of them.

We have two Bostons as well (and recently aquired a puggle)

You cannot have ONE Boston Terrier. They have to play...a lot otherwise they get fat and sick sooner. Some dogs have to come in pairs. Downside is they get at the same time and when you lose them it's tough. My brothers had Great Danes,,,,only lived 7 years but they would get another..Now they all hve Bostons...LOL

What bothers me is people who get the worng dogs for the environment they live in. Like St Bernhards in Las Vegas...or Labs and active work dogs in Apartments with no yards to run in. They can get very destructive if they cannot air it out often. Walking isn't enough.

LOL funny you say that! Yes, once we had one we wanted a 2nd! We rescued our girl when our pup was 11 months old, they are only 8 months apart in age. Yeah, they are going to grow old together and we will likely lose them close to each other, but they will have many years of being spoiled and loved before that happens. I lost my 1st dog, a 11yr old wonderful mutt, when Tank was 8 months old, it was very hard and Tank was depressed about not having a buddy too.
We live near Las Vegas and while Boston's don't tolerate extreme temps well we do everything we can to accomodate them. They have a doggie door, kiddie pool and even cooling vests to wear, I spare no expense for them! They also have winter clothes even though our winters are mild lol.
I do agree that people need to find a dog to fit their lifestyle and living arrangements, any dog can become destructive in the wrong environment and not properly entertained. 2 dogs help entertain each other, but that's not enough, you have to stay involved.

Yea you want to make sure the guard catches their mouth when they are in that "mode" because regardless.... somethings getting bit haha. After commands are dropped thought they are just as loveable as any other dog

Yell the release command a dozen times and as long as that dog's eyes and pea brain are on the bite, you're well and truly screwed if he's got you

For a time, I trained patrol dogs and learned a very healthy respect for them.
