by observation of working in hospitals (just my observation, no facts to back this up) being admitted into the hospital is almost the worst thing to do. It seems like most the people (Not all cases as some are extremely worse than others) that come into the hospital just feeling bad, don't seem to make it out as they did when they came in. Meaning I question throwing some of these patients on ventilators way too early and their body relying on it and never coming back off of it. It seems as if the patients that feel terrible and stay home have a higher chance of pulling through in a few days rather than the 20-30 they end up spending inside the hospital fighting for their lives. Again, this is just what I see and I know everyone's cases are very different case by case.

You are far from the first person with a toe dipped in a hospital I've heard say this...There is a medical podcast I listen to and he and his MD guests had the same sentiments...Like "Well, you're here...so...good luck to you..." like covid hospitalization is the titanic hitting the iceberg...

The doctor said he would go so far as to tell people NOT to get admitted and go get the MCA's and then come back if need be...

They did it again today...must be trying to fish out stop losses before the next big run up ;)
Oh and FYI on the TSX (Toronto Stock Exchange) $15.90ish is $20 so that's why it keeps bouncing around this $16 range...it's a major resistance point in canadian dollars

I'll have to give it a listen on my drive home from work this evening. Again, i have 0 data other than observing these people coming in. When you get admitted, it seems as if its signing your death certificate yourself. I really hate to say that because i've seen plenty of people walk out after being admitted. Although, almost all these patients get worse while they're here. However, I've hardly seen/know people that have caught it several times by now just be found at their home with the same troubles.

Well, there's more to it than just being admitted. The biggest thing I see with covid patients is morbid obesity. I often see BMIs 40+...ya ya bmi isn't the best tool, but when you aren't just obese.. But morbidly obese the numbers don't lie. I've seen BMIs as high as 70-80...i calculated the avg bmi during delta and it was 38+.

Age and other Comorboties are the next thing people don't want to see.

As far as putting people on a ventilator, I can tell you we have learned and changed practices. We don't intubate pre-empitively as we would in other ARDS scenarios. We have pts self prone on high Flo, diurese, etc... But when pH's are 7.0X, there is literally no other option other than to intubate and/or place on ecmo.

You are correct that if placed on a ventilator, your survival rate goes down. But without a breathing tube, their survival rate would be next to 0.

I still think treating patients at the first sign of symptoms is the best way to survive. Well, actually being active, healthy, and not overweight is the best way.

Once you are admitted, all you get is dexamethasone, remdesivir, and a vent

They're definitely other factors. Not denying or speaking of those. I'm just saying strictly admissions vs. stay the F away lol.

Nurse? But isn't your name Mike?

    :)

Yes, obesity. The crux of the issue is the most affordable food is the worst for you...although fast food is getting pricey lately. It's like $10 for single meal at a MCD/BK maybe we'll hit that tipping point where people go back to shopping for groceries and budgeting.

Oh, and here is the podcast. It's on ITUNES etc...Multiple eps deal with covid stuff. And the listener questions are great. The host specializes in palliative care so the ongoing joke is that all his patients die so he must be a shitty doctor.

I mean, obviously there is a difference between testing positive, having a fever, chills, and body aches vs low oxygen saturation and cyanosis... One you can ride out at home, the other you unfortunately need a vent.

Our covid ecmo survival rate is 68% - I wish I knew our covid intubated survival rate, but it surely has to be higher than that.

I don't believe in the mandates of anything. I understand there is a 99% survival rate. I don't think there should be lock downs. But unfortunately people DO need the hospital, and people do survive even after being intubated... Hell, even after ecmo.
