thoughts on powered subs?

so im trying to find a sub or my doublecab with out losing a buch of space and with out spending $1000 (sound advice quote for custom box sub and amp) so i went on to crutchfield and found a few things im intrested in,

the reviews on it are pretty good 4 1/2 out of 5 from 47people. the nice thing is i dont have to buy a box sub and ampand it will fit right under my seat so woot for saved space

I have one of those in my possession but have not hooked it up yet, just got it in a couple days ago. I have seen posts on other forums and basically said the same things that you read on Crutchfield's rating. You can get them a whole lot cheaper than Crutchfield on ebay from good sellers. I am looking for a clear thump not enamel busting air moving bass. My set up is going to be all installed in the right rear compartment. The amp is fitting in the shelf, the XM receiver is on the bottom shelf under the amp and the SW1 is going along that (vertical). I am reinforcing the back and the shelf. The back of that SW1 has a indentation that can latterly hang on the outside child seat hook. If my amp was not in the way I would be putting it there...sits pretty there and with a little reinforcement would make a clean install.

I've got the infinity bass link. I had a dedicated montero climbing rig and it was great. Now its in my track car and it has too much sound. I have to take it out everytime I track so its a pain. I'd offer to sell it to you but I see you can get them on ebay for under $100 and thats less than I can let it go for.

hey duckman can you show a picture of your set up how you plan on having it hooked up so i can have an idea how to do mine. i was thinking of puting it under teh passenger seat but not sure if it will fit

 

I do not have that part of it together yet. I am mounting it vertically, basically next to the little shelf and the outside child restraint hook. I am trying to finish up the right side now...I will post pics later.

 

I too was in the market for an underseat powered sub. I was not looking for a Thumper that you can hear 8 miles away but meerely something to enhance the listening experience. I posted on TW a request for opinions on the Focal Bus 20- 8" powered sub for underseat applications. I have an 06 PreRunner W/Access and I didn't want some box taking up space in the cab. Anyway, I got a lot of sneers from the folks who post on this forum and almost did not buy one. BUT in the end, I bought one and had it installed. It is OUTSTANDING! It has a separate volume control knob that I had installed in my dash. Here it is:

I see a lot of folks around here don't like powered subs, but I think they serve their purpose. I want the ease of installation and size. I upgraded my front to a component set and the rears as well (non-component). The mids and highs are fantastic, but lost a lot of the low end when I switched to aftermarket. I just want to get some of that lowend back without breaking the bank or shaking the car next to me.

 

This is exactly what I want in my truck and I'm surprised that Focal makes one of these types of enclosures... but for $629 as listed on their website??

 

Powered subs really do suck. You'd be better off just buying a really good set of component speakers that have good midbass, because those powered subwoofers are usually just 6.5" component woofers. I have the RE xxx6.5 components and they put out more bass then the factory jbl subwoofer.

 

Check out the boss audio bass600 or 800. I picked one up about a year ago for under $100 and its pretty nice no problems yet.

 

I bought it from a custom car audio shop. About $600 installed. I think the FOCAL (Fo-cal is how they pronounce it).
IMHO if you want a thumper with a big box enclosure that takes up a lot of space, this is not what you want.

 

I already use all the space under and behind my rear seats, and I also didn't want a sub that was loud enough for your neighbors to hear... I find that stupid.

I got a Boss Bass1500, it fits under the passenger seat, and it gives a good thump and full sound. I mainly wanted a full sound whether I am listening to jazz, classic rock, or hip hop. I love mine!

 

Id be really curious to see how this unit sounds. I have an access cab and dont want anything out in the open or taking up what little space I have left. This is the only powered sub that actually interests me... but the price turns me off!

 

That Kenwood does not fit under the seat of a second gen. It does mount nicely on the back panel, and it does a decent job as far as I'm concerned.

 

The Focal does sound good. The enclosure from the above picture looks like cheap plastic but it is cast alluminum and the unit is actually quite heavy for it's size

 

I figured it should be quite good sounding based on the price and the fact that Focal decided they needed to make one of these units. I would definitly buy one if it was 1/4 of the price.

 

I just had an X994 Kenwood HU installed and am lookig for a powered Sub as well. There are two schools. Head pounding 1000 watt 12" subs moving a ton of air across city blocks.......and a nice fill in of the missing low frequency content at lower volumes.

In a small cab, that should not be too terribly difficult to achive with a small powered solution. the question is...which one?

I am leaning to the the Bazooka BTA6100BT and it has great reviews from those who own it with small trucks. The Boss seems ok as well but hit or miss as far as longevity, Focal is too expensive for what I want....$600 for a small under seat solution...wow. I think something between a Lanzar and Focal should fill the void.

I don't listen to RAP or electronic dance or trance or much .The lowest string on a 5 string bass is an open B. The fundamental frequency is 31Hz but its not necessary to "hear" that as there are plenty of harmonics that can be heard. That and most of the music I listen to is classic rock where 4 String basses are the rule and they have a low of 41Hz. Zepplin, Steely Dan, Early Chicago, EWF.....Allman Bros. Just fill in the lower end. 35Hz would be ideal.
