When I bought my 05 access cab new I was paying just over $400 a month for it. I financed it for 5 years but paid it off in about 3-1/2. I haven't had a car payment since, and it sure is nice. I paid cash for the 05 I have now after selling the other one. Unless I get in an accident and total the thing I don't plan on getting another one for quite a while. I'll just keep fixing this one as things come up.

Anyone in the market for a car should read the Edmunds series about an "undercover" car salesman. It's a long read, but really n eye-opener on what you're in for when you visit a dealer.

Payments shouldn't matter. Negotiating on payments is how you get bent over at a stealership. Figure out what you can afford in terms of the price of the tacoma, not the price per month.

Do they still have a Toyota Dealer in Kodiak? I bought my 01 Tacoma when I was up there.

this is 100% correct. the salesman is playing on your inability to do math. i had a payment calculator programmed into my pocket calc. the salesman asked me if i could afford $X payment per month. i did some quick button pushing, and it was the monthly payment for sticker price. i laughed at him and asked him, "how many people fall for that crap?" and told him i will pay, $Y per month which works out to $200 over invoice price.

they then did that bait and switch BS where they get the manager..i walked..and bought a used truck cash.

I just got a 2011 and my payment is $525 but I didn't put much down. 2k plus the equity from the 08. Got a trd OR 4x4 has pretty much all the options. I'm gonna pay like $650 a month though.

$225, here. Turns out I could have probably done way more. But in my line of work, job security is a joke and winters are always lean.

It's kind of nice, having the minimum payment set so low, though. I'm already a year and a half ahead of schedule. The way my loan works, that means the next payment isn't technically due for a year and a half.

Of course, I'm still doing payments. But somehow it feels better when I'm voluntarily staying way ahead, instead of running like hell to ward off the repo man.

Right now I pay $180 a month thanks to a big down payment from my 01 tacoma.

    of course
157 a month and I am not a fan of paying more than 200 a month. I used to drive cars that cost as much as some of the payments I have seen listed here. A vehicle is just not a good investment so I hate to pay the interest. If I had a job that required a vehicle that I could not afford, that may be enough incentive to spend the extra dollars on a payment.

My payment is $194 a month, but I am paying $200 every 2 weeks towards it. It will be paid next year at the latest. I hate payments.

    Too few to list.
It's not about the amount of the monthly payment since that is determined by several factors. 1) price of the truck, 2) down payment, 3) Finance Rate.

    Let's just say $30K truck with $5k down = $25K then add financing = Back to $30K.

$30K for five years is a $500 monthly payment. So it's basically, what can you do to make that monthly payment as low as possible?

I probably have one of the larger truck payments on the site. Bought my 2010 dc lb trd sport brand new in june with $1000.- down. They want me to pay about $650 a month for 5 years, but I'm paying $1000 a month and it should be paid off in about half the time. I caught the mod bug hard though so I also spend a lot on stuff for my truck. Makes it hard to afford anything else, especially when I want to buy a house

Paying $380 to my own separate "car mm account"

When you guys finish paying the bank, set up a money market account and make the same payments your yourself for another 36-60 months. You are already able to afford them. All you need to do is keep them going for ONE more cycle and You will NEVER have to take a car loan again. You can even use the money you are paying yourself for repairs and still be fine.

Been doing this since I was 24. As a side benefit when you go car shopping, since it is YOUR money you are paying as opposed to the banks, you will find yourself making different value judgments and negotiating a lot tougher. Writing a check for $15-20K plus the trade makes one rethink the whole idea of what one wants verses what one needs. And if you miss a payment or three......no harm no foul. If you find a zero interest loan you can pay with your auto account or personal income and keep the money in the bank or pay some with it. Or you can buy a late low mileage model and save a pile as well...Win win.

I bought a house long before I bought my first and only new car. Was a great choice as I left home at 18 and did not have the luxury of no rent car payments. If I had i would have saved a pile of money before I left home. Made my last car payment on the wife's car a short time after we were married in 95. Set up the same plan on hers.
