    Ashland is literally the next town over from Centralia; Just for grins I looked up real estate in Ashland...

    F0B91686-B4D0-496E-B3A3-E2889814BC1C.jpg

    This exact house (it's a duplex/twin, not a single-family) would be $250K-$280K in my area, and well over $300K in Doylestown (which is like 7 miles from me); If it was totally updated and had central A/C, it would command over $400K in Doylestown. Up in Ashland, my dad's 4-year old GMC Yukon is worth more! :eek:

    Just the LAND in my area would be worth more area than this whole house!

    Haha I always wonder what people do for work in these small PA towns that seem to be so far away from any major city.

    I've pondered moving to one these towns; Apparently if a house is under $100K, you don't have to get PMI (mortgage insurance) if you finance the place and don't put 20% down! However, I think about it a bit and realize that the reason a 3-bedroom, 2,100+ square foot home is selling for the same price as a new Escalade is because there's no work in the area...

    This same house (which is just a few miles from Centralia), in its current condition, would probably be about $300K in my area (more if it had modern amenities like central A/C, and a kitchen with granite countertops)!

    Hell, in Doylestown Borough and totally updated, this place could probably go for close to $1 million!

    @seniorredwood

    Another place in Pennsylvania I'd love to visit is Donora, just for Cement City (picture from Wikipedia)!

    Unfortunately, Donora is clear on the other side of the state and almost 300 miles from me; I would be willing to do a weekend trip out to Western PA where I spent a couple nights in a hotel and explored quaint little towns, but that ain't a day trip. In April 2021, I drove 4 hours to Southern Maryland and 4 hours back home in the same day; However, that for work and in a company-owned minivan, so I was getting paid and I wasn't paying for gas. The president of the company I work for was with me, and he kept buying me coffee to keep me awake, so there was also that...

    I only have a budget for one major road trip this year where I stay in a hotel, and that's reserved for a huge car show in Syracuse followed by a secondary trip to Rochester to visit my cousin who I haven't seen since 1999! My truck is probably gonna have close to 160K miles on it by the end of the year! :eek:

    That said, this is still pretty awesome; I could literally be living in a piece of history for the same price as a new SUV!

    Wow 10000 barrels of cement. That sounds interesting. I’ve been wanting to go up to Potter County to explore a little.

    Check out the house above that I found on Zillow; I could literally sell my Tacoma and have enough money to have the mortgage on that house almost a third of the way paid off!

    By comparison, $375K will get you roughly half the size in Doylestown (though this actually seems to be a foreclosure auction, and the final selling go price will likely be much higher); This house is in incredibly outdated, but it's in good shape and if I had the money I would actually buy it...

    I first learned about Centralia around 2005 from a sport bike forum. I had a dual sport bike and wanted to join a group going there to explore. I've never made it there yet, but would still like to go check it out. I have watched many YouTube videos and documentaries on Centralia over the years. It's a bummer about the road being covered in dirt piles recently.

    But you'd say that I probably won't have any problems just driving around on the marked roads and taking a few pictures?

    Cold, I can deal with; A ghost town 2 hours from my house, in a 2WD truck, with a potential oncoming winter storm? No thank you!

    Might go on Sunday though; A post-snow Centralia would make for some beautiful photo ops!
