Differential Fluid Change 3rd Gen Tacoma

Hi Everyone, Looking to change my differential fluids in my 2014 2nd Gen Tacoma 4wd. I was thinking of using the Valvoline Synthetic SynPower SAE

$29 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90. It says it has the additives for the limited slip differential. Anyone use this before? I know the manual states to use SAE 75W-85. Only brand I found online for this is through Redline. Thxs in advance for info!

Made a mistake with my first post. My Tacoma is a 2014. Keep getting confused with the wife's Sequoia. Sorry about that. From what I just read that is considered 2nd Gen. 3rd Gen, 2016 - up. All screwed up today!!!

also I used the Toyota 75w-85.

 

I don't think any 3rd gens have a mechanical limited slip, it's just brake actuated, so you don't need the additive. The manual should tell you if you need it.

As long as it meets toyota design standard (GL5 iirc), it will be fine. There’s zero functional difference between 75w90 and 75w85

 

Thanks everyone...The manual doesn't say I need an additive. It says Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent. From what I read online LT stands for Non-Limited Slip Differential. It sounds right. Not sure. I just checked out the Valvoline website and it recommended the exact Valvoline product that I am looking to use, Valvoline SAE

I think I remember seeing somewhere that the proper weight of the 3rd gen rear diff fluid is like 130 or so if you want max protection 0 regard to mpg

anyone knows what I'm referring to? I can't seem to find that

 

I use the Valvoline. It is one of the best and the additive won't hurt anything. My local Napa stocks it. There is a lot of info on oils if you do a search. Go to sites like Bobthe oilguy or people that deal with differentials etc. Forums will have people giving all sorts of info and just you scratching your head.

 

LS = for limited slip
LT = non-limited slip

either will be fine in a non-limited-slip diff

 

You have 2 options
Pay a premium for 75w-85 and not worry about it.

Or use widely available and cheaper

75w-90 synthetic. And I still wouldn’t worry about it.

While I’m not a 3rd Gen, I’m running 85w-140 front, and 80w-90 rear.
Neither of which is the actual viscosity stated in the manual. I haven’t worried about it any of it.

The "lsd" in these trucks is just the brake system applying the wheel brake to the the side that has a spinning wheel, the differential is a standard open diff. I like the redline 75/85, unless your towing near the max capacity of the vehicle or have big tires there is no reason to use a higher weight and I like using the recommended fluid. Increasing the fluid viscosity will increase the resistance to flow, that in turn will generate more heat in the fluid and less heat is almost always better in the long term. 75/85 has enough film strength on a stock or lightly loaded truck to not wear the gears and going higher wont give you less wear unless your truck is moded or towing heavy wieghts.

I like the redline, its very good oil and they have it in the right weight so my ocd like its it, I also use there transfer case fluid in my truck. That sae 75 stuff(mt-lv).

 

Same 75-90W GL5 in the transfer case? Nathan, you have those magnetic drain plugs back in stock yet? That's what I'm waiting on to do mine.

 

Transfer case takes a sae 75 gl-4, using A GL5 instead of a gl4 is not a good idea, they are not interchangeable. Only non toyota fluid is made by redline, there mt-lv fluid. the toyota brand fluid is 50 bucks a quart.

 

There are lots of non-toyota GL4 oils besides redline

I mean, I’m just not all that worried about a few viscosity points. I have much bigger problems to worry about.

 

A 75 strait weight? No there isn't, and red line actually has the Toyota fluid (Genuine Transfer Case Gear Oil LF 75W 08885-810800) listed in there product data sheet. I believe that the are 2 more, but they don't list the Toyota oil in there data sheets.
