On 4wd the bearings are pressed onto the hub. You have to remove the caliper and rotor. Then you'll need to loosen the nut on the cv axle then disconnect the abs sensor. After that there are four bolts that you need to loosen on the spindle and then you will have to get the hub/bearing assembly off the spindle hammering should work. After all that it gets a little complicated. The bearing and hub are pressed together, oh yea don't forget to take the age sensor out of the spindle before you remove the hub. You are gonna need a press to get the job done from here. I found this part to be kind of difficult I had a hard time trying to figure out how to get the two separated because it's in a tight spot. I know that some people have cut the bearing off of the hub but you have to be careful not to cut thru the actual hub. Once you figure out how to get the bearing pressed off the hub there is a seal that goes between the hub and the bearing that you need to install before you press the new bearing on the hub, and don't forget to put the bolts in the holes before you press the bearing all the way on or you'll be in trouble. In total I replace two seals when I did mine the one in between the bearing and the hub and then there is one that is on the other side of the spindle that I replaced. Install is just the reverse of disassembly. I got the replacement bearing from oreilly and I got the seals from the dealer, but I tool the seals to oreilly and cross referenced the numbers so now I can get seals from the parts store instead of the dealer. I don't really have any pics but it's pretty self explanatory once you get in there. I hope this helps you out, if you have a 2wd then I hope you know how to change the bearings on a 4wd and your still in the same boat. Good luck. If you have any more questions let me know.

If you have a press and remove the entire spindle from the truck it's pretty easy. The spindle can be used to hold it in place while you press the hub out. Last one I changed a few months back took me an hour and fifteen minutes start to finish. If you don't have a press and you just remove the hub/bearing as an assembly whoever takes it apart is going to have a hell of a time getting the hub out. Might as well just buy a new hub and 4 bolts and assemble it without reusing anything. That's how the local dealer here does them all.

You could buy a brand new hub from rockauto i think for pretty cheap. I have to replace my bearings and I am just going to go with a new hub instead of pressing and messing with that.

I think the only place you can get the actual hub is from the dealer and it's like 200 dollars plus like 50 for the seals you can get the bearing for 100 from oreilly

That article is pretty good but it doesn't address the cause for these actually failing. The seal on the back of the spindle tears and lets water into the bearing. Most people change their bearings without taking the spindle off and I suspect that's why some people who wheel their trucks are right back in there before long. Also if you take the entire spindle off you can use it to hold the bearing/hub assembly in a press which makes taking the hub out really quick and painless with no grinding and no chance of damaging the hub.

So if you replace the hub, it's just a bolt-up situation?

If you bought a bearing and a new hub, seal, and 4 bolts from Toyota you could press it together (or have them do it for you) and it would be a completely bolt-in deal. But that's probably $250 worth of parts for one side. I haven't seen anyone selling them assembled yet though. Also like I mentioned if that inner seal is torn you are going to be right back in there pretty quick unless you remove the spindle and change it.

Gotcha, none of mine have gone bad. Just been seeing a lot of conversation about it lately and was getting curious.

Hey guys, I am old and slow and confused!!!
I am needing to replace the LF wheel bearing on my 08 4wd, I got the outer bearing out by cutting out two of the bolts and was then able to place two half inch steel bars across my press and pushing the hub out. BUT what about the other (inner ) bearing ? I dont see any way to hold the inner race and press the hub out???

    HELP
    Thanks,

    alpinebob

You will need a bearing splitter to pull the inner race off the wheel hub. I have had a few that gave me trouble and ended up cutting into it some before it would release. It is a hit-miss sometimes on those. I suggest against using direct heat from a torch, but you can try putting the whole thing into an oven at 350-400 degrees for 20 minutes and trying again. If you give up, I sell the entire unit, ready to install, for $170. But I think you can do it, it just will take a little time.

bringing back an old thread, I just pressed the hub back into a new bearing today and now it's stuck.
I pressed the bearing back a little bit it spins freely with no strange noises but there's too much play.
I really can't figure out what I did wrong here there's not much to this?

I have no idea. Is there any reason you didn’t just do the whole assembly?

Buy the time you press the old out/ in and off/on. Buying the whole assembly senses easier to me?

Hopefully someone that’s disassembled the hub can help. But I’d say very few here have done it. I know one member here builds them. Maybe he can help?
