It's actually a good security measure to take a glance into the back seat when getting in your vehicle. Mom was just security conscious :) When I worked EMS years back and we'd get talks on security from police agencies that was one of the things they mentioned to do before you sat down.

@RichVT where in Vermont? I lived in Johnson (Lamoille County) for 10 years. Ran away from the snow in 2011!

I've heard talk about federal mandates (or requests for it) for car mfg's to put some kind of warning systems into cars for those parents whom can't remember their kid is in the back seat.
Then I think "Thanks for making me spend a few hundred dollars more for a car just to help people who shouldn't have had those kids anyway."

Yep. Apparently todays parents cant be bothered to remember on their own that another human being is in the car with them. Gotta get on twitter to see who liked the picture of their fancy dinner.

I always check the back seat at night before driving anywhere. I had this scary experience years ago getting in the car one night and as I started down the road I noticed movement in my rear view mirror, and saw a head start slowly rising up from the back seat.

Kids had left a helium filled balloon back there a few days earlier and it had just enough helium left that I guess the movement let it rise up.

SO YEAH ALWAYS CHECK FOR BALOONS.

It's similar to coffee cups telling you the contents are extremely hot. Or the warning telling you not to eat tide pods or drink bleach. Remember, don't let your child play with a plastic bag, they may suffocate.

Our neighbors would do porch drops at night also to get us to adopt their giant zucchini also, thats pretty funny!

I was quite young when my oldest sister got married, and I hid in the back seat of their car before they left for their honeymoon trip. As they started to leave with all of our family waving goodbye, I got up and waved too.

I agree with your thought, but if we limited people's ability to do stuff by their capability to do it responsibly, a lot of people wouldn't be doing a lot of things.

This just in, today:.... quite pitiful. One has to wonder how someone can go to the 'mall' and forget about their child.

Mine just started doing it. And after reading the article above, it makes sense. If I open one of the back doors first, the system thinks I put something back there, like groceries or a child. After you start the engine, then shut it off, the system reminds you.

"When one of the rear doors of a Toyota vehicle is opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle's engine starting, a reminder will appear on the driver information display on the center gauge cluster – a serious a multitone chimes will be heard if rear doors aren't opened after the alerts start."

WTF, I'm from a family of 4, my wife's from a family 12 none of them were forgotten in the cars and at time air conditioning was not always purchased. Almost no one let their kids die in cars. It's just a way to let people off the hook for lack of awareness.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
A few criteria have to be met for you to get that alert

open a rear door and close it (with the truck off)
open the drivers side door, close the door and start the truck
    drive
    turn the truck off

    You should see the warning

Odd that I just had this alert for this first time today. Have had the 21TRDOR since 9/15 and with a family of four, I just managed to hit the magic sequence to trigger the alert for the first time?
Either it's not functioning correctly, or as a poster mentioned above, perhaps it involves a temperature sensor as well. It's pretty chilly in Missouri, around 10F when this alert hit.
