Unfortunately I do not have a picture because the guy whizzed past me...

I was waiting in traffic after leaving work and a Tacoma just like mine (5-lug RC in Silver Streak Mica) drove past me in the left turn lane; It had a custom tailgate with "TACO" stamped in the lower left corner like the rear fenders of a Tundra TRD PRO. Never seen anything like it before and was wondering if anyone knew whether this was a one-off custom job or if someone makes them...?

I haven’t seen any second gens like that yet. See quite a few with stickers trying to match the third gen embossed tailgate.

I'm pretty sure this is my first time seeing one! This particular example is a 2011 mode, easily identified by the front grille; It appears to be a very basic SR5, as it has the color-keyed bumper, but no foglights. Based on the rather rough condition of this truck, I'd say that the bed was damaged and the owner found it cheaper build what you see here...

If you get rear ended and insurance pays $1300 you can buy an aluminum Ute tray but they’re $2-3k and you’d still have to pay the difference

they are higher clearance but I don’t know how much off road and armor protection they offer since it’s not a steel rear bumper

How much is an entire rear bed from a totaled truck? I would do a ute bed on mine if that happened again!

I’m sure buying a used bed assembly would be cheaper. And if a rear end is hard enough to damage bedsides and tailgate then insurance would have a higher repair estimate to pay as opposed to simply a dented rear bumper

but the Ute tray would give it more of an African/Australian safari land cruiser look
And has side panels that can fold down to make loading cargo easier
    3007EC3D-95A7-4AB2-8376-799EB08D6BE0.jpg

unfortunately it probably removes the ability to have a Softopper or leer shell

for an enclosed top this house thing looks like it must be loaded on with a forklift

looks pretty high clearance in the back though

Not that I know of, but you can check out his YouTube channel. I don't think he has a video specifically about his bed build, but you can see a lot of his Tacoma (and other builds) there: https://youtube.com/c/FabRats

I too have only seen one. It was at a meet up at Chi-Town 4x4 in Carol Stream IL last June. I never talked to the guy but it looked pretty cool but it wasnt nearly as fancy as that one.

If you live in New England flat beds are pretty much a standard on any vehicle over 5 years of age. At least full size junk like ford, dodge, Chevy, otherwise the bed rails are sparking on the highway.

The "house thing" is lifted using the small 4 squares on each side. There are jacks that are inserted to raise the canopy so you can use the load bed for other things.

Stakebody Tacoma? Hmm… I can dig it for a lawn maintenance crew. Maybe a small dumper stakebody.

Living in New England, I will have to agree with you there.

If the box is not been turned into a flatbed then usually I see the trucks appear to be folding at the bed and cab, with the top front of the bed leaning in against the cab.
