This is 100 percent in case I make a bad decision. I’ll never rock crawl or anything like that….I buried a Jeep once, and a winch would have saved my butt.

ok…99 percent to save my butt and 1 percent for looks.

I was typing same time INSAYN was. Ditto. Anytime out and the situation looks dicey get out and walk it over first. Sometimes a winch on the front may not be the direction you want to keep going. Ask me how I know.

I already feel like it drives like a caddy haha. I’m surprised at how smooth it is.
Anyhow, I have much to consider….but I’ll probably add the weight, then have some 5100's thrown on this fall. Or do it myself…doesn’t look that hard to do.

Put on a front receiver. Mount the winch on a receiver post. Now you can recover front AND back. Stow the winch in a box or garage when not needed. No weight issues, now wear and tear needlessly and you can use on other applications.

I would agree 100% on this route.

If I ever decide to do a winch, I will certainly be doing this. It gives so many more options to the equation.

why do you want a winch and bumper. If you cant install it on your own imo you shouldnt be wheeling. Things are gonna break offroad. The mere fact to get a winch means youll be in tough situations. Go watch youtube vids buy some tools and learn how to put it on. Unless your strictly a pavement queen then just spend all your money on kings.

Do the bumper and winch. I did that three years ago and there was minimal change in the ride. However... if you plan on adding more weight: armor, heavier tires and wheels, roof rack, etc., you might want to consider an aluminum front bumbler.

Because I want it done right. I’m not really keen on taking a saw to my front bumper in my garage and turning a 600 dollar project into a 1200 dollar project.

I added some weight on the tires already but nothing crazy. Outside a sturdier skid plate, this is my last mod for awhile. No racks for me.

personally i wouldnt wana wheel with anyboady who doesnt know how to wrench. Idk what kind of bumper but just take off the screws and a lil elbow grease, if you fuckup well you were gonna get rid of the bumper, put some masking tape and trace it idk what kind of bumper, just take a grinder to it

Here is my front setup. I took a curt bolt on receiver (under the paw) and welded two more mounts (shackles installed) so I have three options as well as an offset to rig a snatch block from.

Can I suggest holding off on a winch, and bumper if you don't actually need them.

Sure a winch is a very effective tool for many situations, but not the end all.

There is a little known fact that if you have 4WD, odds are good you will get stuck worse than if you didn't. You just wouldn't take a route beyond the capability of a 2WD.

    Same thing for a winch.
If you have the winch, odds are good that the perception of said route is skewed a bit, thus leaning the driver towards making the decision to go further than what their 4WD skills would normally dictate.

A set or two of high quality traction boards might serve a driver better than a winch in most situations.

Tires don’t weigh down the suspension as they are in contact with the ground. Start saving for suspension, your on the slippery slope!

Definitely noted. I’ve actually thought about this quite a bit. I’m not a risk taker off road, and this is my daily driver. Most of where I’m going around here is old logging roads, or heading to some abandoned strip mines for the bass ponds. I have a set of boards, but the winch is a backup. I don’t want to get stranded out in the middle of nowhere again. Once was enough.

I definitely won’t be using this to get over obstacles that I otherwise couldn’t get over. I doubt I need it. But I don’t want to be in a spot where I do and don’t have it.

You’re better off getting a rear locker, a farm jack, tow straps, some traction boards and a shovel.

Are you afraid of mud? Are there trees where you wheel that you can winch from?

Edit: Nevermind, I see you have a locker.

Did you get stuck in this truck or another? The off-road with locker engaged and traction control engaged is a tank.

I have winch and bumper on a 2nd gen factory with 265’s never noticed anything and a 3rd gen pro factory with 33’s and never any rubbing at all. That’s just my experience and they get used hard in the woods (mostly mud)

This is sage advice. A high lift and a decent purchase point gets you out of anything.

seeing op’s wrenching skills i would highly advise him NOT to ever use a hilift jack, they are extremely dangerous, i hust use a simple lil bottle jack.

Haven’t even come close to getting stuck in this truck. But I buried a 2000 Jeep Cherokee out in the middle of a nowhere at night on a solo trip. While it was fun, I’m not doing that again.
