So I went mountain biking w/ my sister who is visiting from out of town, and got back to the parking lot to find my passenger side window bashed out. They must have watched us the whole way because they just grabbed her backpack from behind the seat and nothing else, even passing on my wallet in the glove box, fortunately. Unfortunately my sister's backpack had her laptop, phone, wallet, covid pass, cash, credit cards, etc.

Anyhoo, looking for reputable glass replacement recommendations around the mid-penn/sf area.

Anyone have experience with Safelite? They are quoting ~$400. Seems like kind of a lot, but mostly I just don't want some ogre in there, f'n sh!t up!

    TIA!

I've had Safelite replace a windshield. They did what they said when they said.

On a kind of side note, I wonder how much window tint helps when it comes to breakage. Or could.
You can put a film on commercial windows that helps with smash and grab scenarios.

Ha! Yeah I've been looking into this kind of stuff. Belatedly.

Seems it basically comes down to 3 types of "protection" for your unattended vehicle, since car alarms are universally ignored, lol.
    1) Tint and the like, to hide/obscure the interior
    2) Security glass/adhesive films, to 'harden' the windows
    3) Automobile safe/lockbox

The 1st type would likely not have helped us, as we were almost certainly being cased as we stowed it away. And at a bare minimum, you really shouldn't leave stuff out in the open anyway.
2nd type would likely have prevented the theft, but has me worried (too much, probably) about getting trapped inside in an accident.
3rd type might have helped if I had one, it was big enough and it worked.

So for now I will probably not upgrade the security, as the options all have drawbacks that outweigh their benefits for me; this being the only break-in I've suffered <<knocks wood immediately>>.

I will just not leave any valuable stuff in the truck.
Or if I absolutely must leave something, stash it well before I get to where I'm going to park.

They’re watching you even when you think you aren’t. Best security is to just not have anything. I got my window busted at Costco for my backpack they watched me put in the trunk. It had nothing in it anyway other than my sandwich, work badge, masks. They passed on my big JBL speaker that was just sitting there.

But yea, safelite for me. Even showed up 2 hours early which worked for me since I had work.

Check your insurance. They tend to use safe lite and was also quoted $400. Instance was going to cover $250 of it.

The PD posts Facebook “hints”. Lately, some cutsie 9pm routine about locking up your car and making sure there’s nothing in it. Same thing with shopping malls and strip malls and “we are not responsible” signs.

Maybe if stealing were against the law, this wouldn’t be a problem.

I once used All Star Glass in Santa Clara after my sedan got broken into many years ago while I was visiting the bay area. I was not happy -- I had troubles with that door and window ever after. Not sure if all star glass was responsible, but the problem did mount after they replaced my glass.

The service tech after repairing the glass came to me and asked "has someone been in there before". I answered yes, that door had previously been hit in an accident. He told me something about how one of the screws was stripped and how he managed to fix it for me. I don't know if he messed up and was fibbing to me, or if it was genuinely problematic from earlier -- but thereafter that door and window had several problems which costed me a lot more. I would go with someone more reputable as a result. Their price, though, was very easy on my student pocket back then.

Hey guys, thanks for all the recommendations and comments.
In the end, I went with Safelite in SSF - as they are just down the way from where I live.
They were a little overbooked, but did a very nice job (cleaned out all the broken glass, etc.).
And once I got there, they got the job done when they said they would.
    I give them 5/5 stars.
