I’m a little surprised also, what’s interesting is the deputy that called the neighbor is a narcotics investigator and typically wouldn’t handle stuff like that.

Already have 2 approved and 7 pending but if they’re gonna complain then F them, I’ll shoot suppressed or not and not care what they think.

May be buddies with your neighbors. People around here name drop LEO friends/family constantly.

...or maybe he's looking for some friends to do some night shooting with. That would be the response from a lot of our local deputies.

Are there any downsides to modifying a gun, like putting in an apex trigger or swapping the barrel?

I'm not in love with the trigger in the M&P that I purchased. I had heard that the trigger was upgraded in the 2.0, but it still feels.....not good. I went to the range with a buddy who just picked up a very similarly equipped XD-M and the trigger was night and day better on the XD-M (despite it being a cheaper gun).

so back to the question: assuming that reliability is not impacted, are there any downsides to a modified gun if used in a self defense situation?

Theoretically, I could see a prosecutor (or maybe defender?) making a case that someone was a "gun nut" who was "looking to shoot someone" with his gun that was modified with "the sole intent to kill" an innocent person. The reality is that I'm just a dude who has a concealed carry permit who doesn't like the way the trigger feels on my new gun.

You nailed the only downside, and that is the prosecutions case.

As long as you are putting in a duty trigger and not a race trigger, you are good. Any good defense lawyer will take care of you.

I run APEX duty triggers in my carry Smiths and Glocks. I also run their forward set trigger bar and trigger in my 320s. Like you, I just want to tighten up the trigger and change the shoe to something a little more to my liking. I keep a file for each one of my guns, so it shows what mods have been completed.

I'm leaning toward this one: https://www.brownells.com/handgun-p...d144629.aspx?avad=202211_b264c4b55&aid=161799

It is polymer instead of aluminum like the standard Apex, but it sounds like it has all the same internals. For $70 less, I don't think polymer is a bad material as that is what the current trigger is made of. Sure, it doesn't have the cool factor of having the aluminum apex, but I'm not looking to show off to anyone.

Anyone have any suggestions/ideas on how to store/stash gun cases? I'm redoing my "throw everything in there" room and want things a bit more organized.[IMG]

I could see a prosecutor (depend on the region of the country you live in) making a case against you just because you carry a weapon. In court, they will absolutely do everything possible to make their case but I think it is a weak argument that any good defense attorney would be ready for. You are a responsible gun owner with the proper permits who regularly practices marksmanship and has personalized his weapon so it can be safely and effectively employed. The prosecution tries to paint the picture of you being a gun nut whereas the defense paints the picture of you being a responsible gun owner who has personalized the weapon so that it is safer to use.

The "looking to shoot someone" is an intent based argument. It is going to take a hell of a lot more than some gun smith work to demonstrate intent IMO - of course I am not giving legal advice and I am not a licensed attorney - we're just talking theory here. Schedule some time with a local attorney if this is a genuine concern. The money you spend in the initial consult will be worth what you learn if you find an attorney worth his salt. I have insurance through USCCA to protect against douche bag prosecutors looking to destroy me just because I carry a weapon. God willing I will never have to employ my weapon but the insurance is there in case I have to defend myself.

I think that was just something shared online and everyone parroted it. No different than using HP's. "Why were you using hollow points? Did you want to kill someone?".

Sure, they can make any argument, but most wont even waste their time. Unless it's some highly modified national case and even then, there are easier points of attack. Like word manipulation. "Full semi auto". Etc etc. Easier to just play the race and politics cards.

Lots of good info in this thread on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/CCW/commen...bed&utm_name=aed42f5b726347e0b711a9e6234028a0

Seems like the consensus comes down to "Does the modification provide a reasonable benefit to the operation of the firearm?" If yes, then you should be safe in a court of law. If no, then you may have some questions. The common one to point to is the punisher or skull logos. If you have those on your firearm somewhere, then it looks bad.

It seems as though the most common thing to get people in trouble, aside from the aesthetic stuff, is modifying the trigger pull. Too light and you're in trouble. My takeaway was that as long as the pull weight of the trigger is "within spec" you are safe. The problem is "who determines what is in spec?" Several articles referenced in the comments of that reddit thread specifically mention the Apex duty/carry triggers and state that they are beneficial and not likely to be used against you in court. This gives me some peace of mind in ordering the Apex trigger for my M&P.
