I'm by no means an electric expert, but i was under the impression that if there was a surge in electric vehicles where they became the majority, the current electrical grid could not sustain the power consumption. Granted EV's are by no means the majority so we're a ways off from it. Like I said, I'm truly out of my element on this topic.

Like during AZ summers it's common to have rolling blackouts to keep the electrical grid from overworking.

But what do I know, I work at a bank. Haha.

I was thinking about this a few days ago. Last year when the grid melted down in Texas because of some snow they said it was due to the equivalent of every household plugging in two additional space heaters. What would happen if every household were to have plugged in two evs o_O

I don't know for sure, but there are plenty of gas stations I would not stop at to buy gas.

That's reason the grid is being upgraded around the US via the infrastructure bill help/ Except Texas. They don't participate in any federal subsidies. Thus they have one of the worst grids in the US.

Won't most people charge their vehicles overnight when demand is lower ?

Electric companies may even have lower rates then as incentives so people avoid peak usage hours.

It will be fine. Still a misnomer that plugging in a EV with other EVs will blackout the neighborhood, that just a guess at most.

That Tesla pulling an Airstream with an electrified drivetrain is the boomerest thing I have ever seen. There are alot of unnecessary things being electrified, but that is pretty neat.

Why are things being electrified again? :)

Correct me if l am wrong but l was under the impression that many of the rolling blackouts were at night because once the sun went down the solar stopped producing.

I don't think the burden on the grid will be that bad. It would be akin to every house turning on a medium sized AC unit for 3 hours a day only (10-15Kwhs)/day. So basically a normal summer day in America. Is that's enough to overwhelm the grid ? Perhaps? If so, you must have an absolute 3rd world grid in your region. Forget EVs, get on the phone with your local rep or utility provider and demand answers lol. yikes.

It's hard for me to take most of these posts seriously because:

    1) I'm a douche who actually drives an EV

    2) I'm a douche who lives in San Diego, where almost every other car is a Tesla ... so clearly it's possible.

I imagine at the turn of the century folks in small tows and the boonies were super fearful of electricity and light bulbs. Probably thought it was witchcraft or reckoned it was too expansive and oil lamps made more sense as "why fix what ain't broke". City folk probably looked down upon them when they had to pass trough their shanty towns.

Duh. In your EV app you simply set “schedule charging time” or “set departure time”. And it will only charge at off peak rates

The worse thing about EVs will be the people who knock on your door trying to sell you energy at a reduced rate. Will also be the same people who will want to talk to you about your cars extended warranty.
