What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I Will tub it eventually. Not sure I have enough time (might be leaving for Saudi this weekend)

Got the 35’s on now, went for a drive and didn’t hear one bit of rubbing. Even up on a snowbank, I barely contacted the fender flare.. those will be cut tonight plus the fender behind. That should get me by if I do leave. If not, I’ll be cycling the suspension and tubbing fully this weekend.

 

Asking again if someone wouldn’t mind posting up a picture of their TB cable nuts so I can compare how mine are placed to theirs. I’m still tweaking with it right now but a reference pic would still be nice.

 

Do you mean how yours are adjusted compared to some one else? The cables stretch, that’s why they have adjustment, so mileage and condition are going to be major factors. Here’s a picture of my TB, I don’t think it will do you much good though.

 

Yes compared to someone else’s who has a normal idle. I replaced my IAC recently and my idle has been high since. 1000 rpms in park.
Is that a 4 cylinder?
While I was replacing the IAC I also tightened the cables a little. It’s just weird cus I’m positive that I didn’t tighten them enough to start opening the valve but perhaps I did.

 

Just get a thin/small size pick tool and insert it into the connector (power off of course ). There is a tab in there that locks the terminal in place. The L connector may end up being destroyed in the process of releasing the terminals but whatever, not going to need it again.

I thought I reused the original terminal but looks like I did not (see below).

Also note, you may need to bore out the hole a little bigger to accomodate your new accessory plugs. My aftermarket USB and Voltage meter did not fit.

 

If you still have them, I'd be interested in picking them up from you. Looking for some for the first gen I just bought.

 

Just loosen the cables all the way to test if they’re holding the throttle plate open. It’s pretty unlikely though. If you just replaced the IAC that would be the main culprit. Was it used, aftermarket, OEM? I would be suspicious of anything other than a new OEM or known good used one.

 

I replaced my 96's IAC with a cheap one from Amazon. No issues with idle.

 

I got it from rock auto for around $150 so it wasn’t the cheap one. Just reconnected the battery and readjusted two cables a little. No change.

 

Consider returning it and getting a replacement. The IAC can be super finicky sometimes. If you’ve ruled out the throttle cables being too tight, reset the ECU, and have a clean MAF, etc then that is almost certainly the issue.

 

ECU stands for?? Is that just disconnecting the battery? And MAF has also been cleaned.

 

Electronic Control Unit, basically the brains of the truck. Yes if you left the battery disconnected for 30 minutes or more the ECU should be fully reset.
My money is on the IAC being faulty.

30 minutes?? Jeez. I only did for like 5 minutes. Probably won’t ultimately fix it but I’ll try 30 min next time.

 

Threw on a customcargrills grill today. Started the easy cutting of flares to get this truck drivable on the road.

 

Installed a new rear end and took it in for an alignment. They refused to do it, saying the rear springs were twisted and the driver's side UCA bushings were shot.



Should I attempt to replace the bushings, or upgrade to aftermarket UCAs?

Try a different shop. Might cost more but never had issues at Toyota dealerships.

It's a 2 wheel alignment so why are they bitchin about the rear? They don't want to work so they are finding excuses to not work. Find a new shop.

 

Replacing bushing in the stock ucas is easy, burn the old ones out, clean up the inside of the metal sleeve, lube and press new bushings in.
