I have the opportunity to buy a decently clean 1st gen 4R or a 99 XJ. Both have some issues, but that’s ok. I really like the idea of the 4R , but the drivers side floor pan needs replacing, and searching the internet I came up empty handed. I was suprised to find not all to much aftermarket support is nowhere near as strong as I thought it was. Same goes for lift kit options, not all to much there (compared to XJ). I think I can get the 4R for around 2-2500 and the XJ for 1-1200. The plan was a sloppy trail rig that was still relatively road worthy. The XJ just needs basic stuff, and I was looking to do a rustys 4.5 lift and some trimming and slap some 33s under it. I really like the fact that u can find whatever you want for an XJ still.

I know this is a Toyota page, but without bias, which would you go for and why?

what year is that 4runner? if it is solid axle, i'd take the 4runner. if its IFS and you just want a junky trail rig, you can probably have more fun in the XJ

1999 is a good year for XJs in terms of being fairly reliable and having good options, for what it's worth

and this is coming from a die-hard toyota "fan boy" and previous 4runner owner.

It’s a 89 with ifs. If it were solid, I wouldn’t even be making this post lol
