Can anybody with the TE confirm that the wheels don’t have center caps? It looks from pictures like a solid wheel with no removable cap in the middle.

    Good evening,

Well... I've been lurking long enough figured I would join the party. Long-time Toyota owner 1993 FJZ 80 and 1996 Lexus LX 450 but this is my first Tacoma. Didn't really want a new vehicle at this particular time due to crazy prices and availability new or used, however, I was made a "Godfather offer" that I could not refuse for the Lexus LX 450 and thus forced into the new/used vehicle market. I looked at several vehicles and settled on the Tacoma specifically the TRD PRO then the search began... long story short none could be found unless A. I wanted to wait for months B. Pay a premium C. to buy used at more than they went new.

I've moved from Houston Texas to Durango Colorado a year ago so rather than having literally dozens of dealerships to shop I had Durango and Farmington Toyota. Fine I figured I'll get a TRD Offroad as everyone else has in the 4-corners area. All were pre-ordered or pre-sold well...darn! The sales guy told me of this new "Trail" model I googled youtube and watched several videos and called the dealership asking what they had coming that was not already pre-sold this was 12/6/21 they had one so I had no choice on options or color I put a deposit down on a white SR5 Trail and waited.

Last week I get a call from the sales guy and this last Friday I took delivery. Like a high school kid with daddy's credit card, I had bought a bunch of modifications before the vehicle was even built (12/31/21) S&B Cold Air Intake, Airraid throttle body spacer, J&L air/oil separator, MBRP 3" Catback exhaust, and Pedalcommander throttle control. Over the weekend. I've put approx 200 miles on the truck thus far and can report my thoughts later. I did remove the front air dam and the predator side steps because I prefer the look without them.

In the meantime, I snapped a few photos yesterday, and feel free to ask me anything.

That's a good list of mods there, have you installed them all yet? If so, what's your butt dyno tell you? Has it got more punch?

How are you liking it vs your other yotas?

They appear to be the same to me. Just different color.

Yes all the modifications were installed this weekend.

Hindsight is that I should a just bought a K&N air filter and been done with it Ha! Having a highly modified Subaru WRX STI in the past I should have learned my lesson, nevertheless I've already ordered a TRD cat back exhaust as the MBRP exhaust is way too loud for my wife's liking and that was her complaint about the Subaru.

We live at over 6,500 feet and I figured the larger air intake was gonna help the engine breath a bit easier. The air/oil separator (catch can) was something from my Subaru WRX STI days as. The pedal commander is something I am still fiddling with. I probably should of stay off youtube and tacomabeast and this forum and I would have saved a few coins.

Comparing this new Tacoma to a 26- and 29-year-old vehicles is like comparing apples to onions, you really can't the FJZ80's basically had an inline 6 that was basically a tractor engine it was a very heavy vehicle and got horrible gas mileage. The good was that off road even with just a old man emu 2" lift and 33's BFG KO's I could go anywhere that "we" wanted to off road in Colorado and Utah.

This Tacoma just needs to take us to the mountain bike and hiking trail heads and occasionally some slightly technical trails around here nothing that I'm gonna need heavy duty recovery gear, rock sliders or heavy overland modifications maybe one size larger BFG KO's when these stock tires wear out.

You’re right. They do look the same. Are the 2021 pro wheels different? I seem to recall they are but now maybe I’m just going crazy.

With these lifts from the factory, I wonder what the next tire size up we can run without rubbing is. Will be interesting to see what people fit on here. I'm sure I could find the answer, but if someone has already planned this "mod" out, let me know. More curiosity, I am running the stock tires until they give out.

Super helpful thanks! Although that’s a dead link for me, the typed out info is more than enough. I wonder, with the stock lift of 1.1/.5, if that changes things.

To be honest I'd just go with the one size up 265/75/16 and leave it be.

    Just my 2¢

That would be my long term plan. I’m not trying to add more strain on the transmission, and I want to keep it as stock as possible. So that’s a conservative size bump. Barely noticeable. Thanks!

Agreed. It's a small but noticeable difference between 265/70/r16, especially if you get something with a more aggressive sidewall like the Falken Wildpeaks.

OK - now that we have had some people take delivery, what are everyone's thoughts on the bed boxes?

I think they could have been much better designed, they don't close that smoothly, sometimes I have to really push it closed, and also, the space is super weird, there's just not that much of it. I almost with they had just left them over the wheel well only, or maybe just put a more traditional one across the back of the bed horiztontally. How is everyone using them? Are you going to sell them? They're certainly not horrible, but not that useful either. Weren't the reason I bought the TE, but still.

Another question, thinking long term here - I wonder how difficult it would be to replace the shocks with nicer ones, while maintaining the same spring/spring height. The reason I think it needs to be precise is due to the factory lift that works perfectly with the safety system. So of course, presumably if a Trail owner was to upgrade the shocks themselves, they would need to maintain that exact stock height.

I presume you could just insert Bilsteins etc. and keep the same spring and it would sit the same height?

I agree. The boxes are a weird shape and not very big. I’m glad they snap closed after they’re locked because they don’t always catch when turning the key. I will keep them with extreme indifference.

I got my jumper cables to fit. I’ll see if I can get a decent air compressor that fits. Maybe add some emergency tools to fill it up

Knowing that I can remove them is a big plus. That being said I don't plan on removing them anytime soon as other than some overnight hiking/camping gear and a couple of MTB's placed in the bed with a tailgate protector I'm not gonna be filling up the bed space that often.

The misnomer was that initially was they were not removable as that is what the salesguy thought until I told him that there is a video on youtube showing a guy removing them from his 2021 Trail edition.

I will mention that you kinda have to slam them shut to make sure they latch.

I plan on removing them the first Saturday after I get the truck. I’d rather have the bed space. I like everything else about the Trail package but I don’t plan on using the bed boxes.
