Looking to replace factory wheels with different factory wheels (TRD Sport for TRD Pro).

Is it worth it to just have new TPMS installed on new wheels or use the old ones? I guess it’s a $$ question.

It is easier to swap what you have, but that isn't always easy. Not to mention if you are selling your wheels, you will make more money selling them with sensors.

With that said, buying replacement sensors adds additional cost as well as potentially programming challenges, but nothing out of the ordinary. You can get aftermarket sensors on Amazon for $50-60. Your tire shop should be able to program them.

When I changed out my wheels on my 2021 a month or so ago I had to replace the sensors. According to the service writer at the dealer they are part of the rubber valve stem and the stems don't survive the wheel change process very well. That said, the new valve & sensor combination were $12.65 each so it added less than $50 to the job. I changed to the 4Runner Pro wheels.

    Oh look, another mod....
I swapped out my OEM rims when I bought the truck (but kept the OEM tires), I kept the original TPMS that came with the truck. I had them mounted & balanced at Discount Tire and they said it wasn't necessary to replace them.

I wonder if something changed because my sensors move between my stock alloys and my 4runner pros just fine. Or if it's just being overly cautious on the dealers part.

The service writer (who I've been using exclusively for several years because she doesn't try and sell me a ton of shit I don't need) said the rubber valve actually comes apart when they try and pull it. I can only take her word for it, but at $12 bucks a piece I don't think she really has reason to BS me :)

I just went through this with my 4Runner Pro wheels too. Firestone wanted to charge me $300+ over this. Les Schwab got the originals in without issues.

Yeah, Firestone (through Tirerack.com) were not a positive experience. Lesson learned for straying from Costco or Discount...

I’ve seen somewhere around $40/tire but $75?! Lesson learned indeed.

When I had my shop put on my new wheels and tires, they just switched over the TPMS from the OEM set up. Didn’t cost me anything extra.

Discount charged me 120, but they couldn't get the to work, so discount refunded me 120 and our the stock ones back on, lol. They seem to be having issues with newer Tacoma's where I live. Les Schwab wants too much, as usual, they suck. They wanted $280. So for now just rocking stock ones. The "service writer" is just trying to sell you new ones.

I should have stated that part too; Les Schwab was about that amount too, which is WAY too much. The difference for me was Firestone telling me I had to source my own new sensors, because they couldn't make it work at all. I paid too much still, but at least I feel like Les Schwab was honest and knowledgeable about what they were doing. I won't be going back either way though.
