How do you like your CVT Hybrid series? I've got a nearly 10 year old Mt Rainer that I've been thinking about replacing with one of these, and it doesn't hurt that they are 40% off right now. But that also gives me pause and wonder why they are on that great of sale.

I love it! Quality is second to none. @TacoFMS can tell you the difference it made coming from his pioneer. That being said I was at CVT in Vegas a couple of months ago and spoke with them. They have a new hybrid model coming out soon which is why it’s probably on a good sale like that. They are trying to make room. I saw the new one in their show room and it’s not even that different. Different material on cover and a couple of odds and ends and that’s it. CVT does sales all the time. Trust me man there’s nothing wrong with it. Top quality! Hope this helps.

tepui had 40% off sales when i got mine back in 2020. it was just before they were acquired by thule. so maybe cvt is getting acquired by someone? or like someone else said, they could be making room for new product with a slightly different logo

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
After going thru several tents, I am amazed that vendors still offer a soft shell version of anything.

That's good to hear, we've been impressed with how well our old Mt Rainier has held up and CVT has seemed to steadily make improvements since then.
One question, are you experienced with using a RTT with a full travel cover like mine? And if you have is the hybrid much easier to pack away?

how many tents? im still on my first tepui kukeman. i do need to replace one of the inner tent body poles, it somehow get bent. other than that it has been fine. left on my truck for over a year in colorado. camped in rain and snow. packing it up is getting easier, but not so much when its freezing outside.

i would make the transition to an ikamper style tent for ease of packing up though. that roofnest condor overland is super high on my list, but ive heard bad things about roofnest quality

They definitely have their place. I want the ease of an RTT but simply don't have the space for a hardshell (nor want the associated weight of one). This cute little fella weighs only 95 lbs and is nice and narrow so there's zero risk of me hitting it on anything.

I take my hat off to you good sir, saving weight is a priority. I bought Aluminum where I could, but she is a heavy, but very capable beast!
I have had low profile alum bars with 2 different soft shells made by Tepui. I got a iKamper on my FJC (which I think is the best of all tents), an AluCab Expedition 3 on the trailer, and I ended up with a GFC on my Taco.

Having the ability to have a low profile tent, and give me the ability to access my bed from all’s sides is huge for me.
I also have a decked drawer system, so this enables me to reach in thru the side gull wing doors, and grab things. Even with all this crap on it, it’s still gets under things.

I like to think my truck is fairly minimalistic when compared to some of the other builds on here and she's still 1,300 lbs over stock (3,900 versus 5,200). Weight adds up fast on these trucks.

Agreed. And the turd gens don’t pull like the 2nd gens. I rolled with a Demello Alum front bumper, Alum Bud Built Skids and roof rack. Sliders and rear bumper are steel. All the little shit adds up.

Shovels, Recovery gear, compressor, jacks, more straps, paddles, fridges, aux power (I got 4 batteries in this ho!), more wiring… hell I regeared just die to the amount of shit I added, not because of tire size. I also pull a trailer, mainly KTMs.

After the tune and gears it brought it back to life, but I don’t blister down the road..this is a glorified mini camper and used as such.

I'd love to do a wedge tent but they are just too small for my needs.

Exact reasons why I picked this one too. Anything bigger would take up too much space, and my wife would suddenly be useless in helping put it on the truck. It's also easy to swap from the Tacoma to her Crosstrek.

Yes, it’s a lot easier. I had a regular travel cover RTT before and the fabric getting caught in the zipper was one reason I switched

Agreed. They are only for crashing out, only small kids can enjoy a card game. I have hit my head on mine several times.

The wedges do a good job of spreading out the weight though, how we it places your center of gravity higher as well.

So this is how I came to my final decision. The standard RTT has great head room, but in the end I wanted better access to my bed. I did not want my RTT sitting way above my cab to grab branches on the trail.
So I ended up getting a GFC and punted on a hard shell. Was looking for something that was super strong, as light weight as I could get and gave me a place to crash. My setup now is (.)(.)s and I am glad I went this way.
There are pros and cons to each scenario. I will say that having a shell/camper with side access and a raised bed made it killer for camping.
Using as a truck? Not so much, it’s now an SUV.

I'm actually expecting an Alu-Cab canopy to be delivered today, really looking forward to the easy side access...I'm also running a decked and I think it'll be a killer combo. Usually I'm sharing the tent with my wife, 10 yo kid, and 50ish pounds of doggo lol. We might fit in an XL size wedge but it'd still be tight.

edit: we've seriously looked at the AT Habitat, but the sleeping area is just too narrow.

I am thinking about one of those for my RCSB tundra. They are as stout as it gets.
Thinking I am gonna get a tray and canopy for it this go around.
We use the flatbed a lot on the property up here. Easy just to load and unload materials.
    MITS makes a killer one!
