OP sounds like you have a good reason now to take a road trip outside of California to buy a cheaper shell. Good luck I paid $1k for mine 2 years ago when prices just started to climb (even here up north where normally they stay cheap).

Editing because I just saw on another thread that RSI might have a 2nd gen option now but you probably have to call them direct:

Let's start with no state income tax and no vehicle inspections.

And depending on location, a lot of open land real estate and/or fresh water real estate (lake/river frontages)

Contrary to the media, Florida is more than Disney, Miami and Jacksonville.

    Bonus: Toppers. :D

Not a perfect place, but no place is. Cali is beautiful, but expensive and government is heavy handed.

    - Fruit/Vegetables/Nuts
    - electric bill. My bill is 2x
Youve pointed out some good things. Land it what gets you in CA. There are things like fruit and vegetables that are very inexpensive. Also electric bills. When I lived there some time ago, my energy usage was practically nothing since I didn't need heating and cooling. Since we're pointing out the bad though it's only fair to mention that household income is one of the highest in the US. That still doesn't justify the crazy cost for land and housing but it's something.

Thats putting it very VERY lightly.

Also the govt here is VERY hypocritical... but thats par for the course with the party that runs this state. Sigh.

I couldn't give one away. I mean it wasn't in great shape, but it would have worked for anyone who may have needed one out of necessity, or could have been fixed up. I ended up taking it to a junk yard just to get it off my truck.

I am in the process of getting a new Tacoma. Won't be delivered until March. It is a 2022 model TRD pro. I've seen all the "generation" talk but does anyone know the dimensions of a 6' bed, what will fit this new truck?
I see "caps" all the time free, or I did, on Craigslist. Apparently there are many reasons I didn't think of until reading this post. For my Tundra it would have cost me 35 hundred five years ago so I didn't buy one. I thought one for a Tacoma would be easier to find. I've looked at Facebook and Craigslist without luck so far. There are a lot of them on there. There are several vendors down in Los Angeles selling used shells that I will check out. There may be some there.
Cracks me up! I just saw a white one in the dirt with a broken back window and and a crappy top and he's asking $300. I'll widdle one out of wood.

I drive pass shanty towns and see a bunch of really old beat up rv’s, look like from the 70’s. Makes me wonder, when a family loses their home, where do they get a old rv from? I suppose a step down from a rv would be a shell. With the ridiculous housing cost and homelessness increasing perhaps those down on their luck are snapping them up immediately, which in turn is driving the market up.

Took me 5 seconds to look up a Leer 100XR asking price $1200 in decent shape in CO

$2k+ in CA fuck this is ridiculous
It’s like that ad here where a guy had a $400 Glock 43 asking $1500

and to think I went Softopper instead; at the time it seemed more sensible because it comes off easily to haul a refrigerator

I’m sure I can get one for a good deal but not without wading through a mile of BS due to geographical location

they’re not even fancy either it’s just a common regular old shell. Not like the new designs RSI smartcap, GoFastCamper etc

there’s one for $600 but longbed

    it’s the land of $2500
    $2500 for a used shell
    $2500 for a 600sqft apartment

uhoh whoops took a wrong turn into Sacramento
