First Taco, 2022 TRD crew, have some questions!

My local dealer had a lunar rock TRD crew cab 5ft bed, cloth interior in transit. I put a deposit on it a couple days ago. Should be here mid March. Never had a Toyota before (always been a Ford guy).

Have some questions:

1. Does this truck come with auto start/stop? If so, how can I disable it? I've also read about Tacoma's having a 30 minute idle automatic shutdown. Can this be disabled?

2. What do you guys recommend for water proof seat covers? I know Marathon covers excellent but they are nearly $600 bucks, would prefer a set of front and rears in the ~$250 range if possible

3. I'm looking for a small 30-ish gallon aluminum transfer tank to mount in the bed. Any recommendations on what one would fit? Reason for this tank is so I can have a water seperator on it before pumping fuel in. Local fuel has a ton of water in it. Only one pump. Constant problem for everyone that lives here.

4. This truck will be shipped to a remote island near the end of the Aleutians. It costs nearly $25,000 to have the truck barged out there. Because of this, it's unlikely it will ever leave the island. Anything I should do to it first?

5. Is there some kind of decent low profile bull bar available to mount an LED lightbar?

Welcome to TW! I don’t really have the answers to your other questions , but for the seat covers I have these carhart covers. While not 100% waterproof, they are water resistant and are very durable being carhart material. Link below. Only thing I’d do otherwise is get 4 bottles of fluid film while the frame is nice and clean and liberally apply it all over the frame, inside and out, floor boards , every little crevice u can find. As for the Bull bar, if you have any interest in mounting a winch, this is a warn lo pro winch mount. Has plenty of space up too to mount a light bar. Also, you could look into ditch lights that mount behind the hood in front of the windshield.

 

Just make sure do you some sort of anti rust precautions since you'll be in a very wet place with salty air

It may be helpful for you to provide some insight into the intended use for the truck while on the island.

1. no start/stop on the tacomas. No idea on the :30 idle limit. - I do not recall reading anything of that sort in the manual. (If this is a thing, your dealer may be able change the settings in the software).

2. / 3. - I don’t have a suggestion.

4. It sounds like a great location. (For a visit!) - Which island? Tell us more! And do send pictures!

- as suggested: spray the underside with woolwax (rustproofing) before you hit the road. I’d suggest maybe 5-6 cans. - you’ll have 1/2+ can left over for touch-ups later.

- get good tires on it (and sell the crap OEM ones) while on the mainland.

- order any additional equipment now so you can ship it in the truck. Including light bars.

5. There are some good looking options. - but if light bars are all you are after. You can mount light bars behind the grill.
(Upper and lower grill). Also on a roof rack - if you are planning on one.
The ditch lights suggested above may be a good option on the island.

1) When driving around, the engine does not shut off. If you put it in park, it will shut itself off after around 30 minutes. No way of disabling this that I know of.

4) Will you be on rough terrain? Might be worth investing in some heavier ply tires so avoid punctures.

The intended use of the truck will be of course driving around. Mostly driving to the dump to shoot rats with a thermal out the windows lol. The island is Adak, the abandon naval station. I can find Fluidfilm locally but can't find any Woolwax in Alaska. Arg. That looks like the better stuff.

 

Wow - this is the first I’ve heard of a 30min engine shut off. Did this start in 2022? I’ve had mine running for at least 45min if memory serves right.

 

Do you need/want the bull bar? Or just using it as a platform to mount an LED bar? There are other options available such as the hidden LED bar in the upper bumper opening.

Me either - but I thought it was because I have a wiggly stick without a 'Park' setting.

 

My 2020 does it. It may be closer to 40 minutes, but I thought it was 30 minutes. If you're just idling, it'll turn off.

Yeah, you're probably excluded because of that "wiggly stick". I hope that means shifter...

 

Oof, a Taco on Adak? How many miles are even available to drive out there? Are there some places where you will get to play off road on the island?

I have a few insights for you. I'm based in Anchorage and I tune Tacomas, so I'm pretty familiar with them:

1) My truck is a 2018, and I've definitely had it idling longer than 30 minutes during tune events; but I'm also opening the doors and doing things with the truck during that time, which might keep it from turning off every 30 minutes. I bet even something like pressing the unlock button will keep it from shutting off.

2) I have Rough Country seat covers. They've been pretty good for the price. They protect well for a little snow/rain, but I know it rains a shitload on Adak. If you need 100% amazing waterproof capabilities, they might fall short for your purposes.

4) I mean... I would recommend getting it tuned before leaving for Adak, but I might be a little biased. 3rd Gens feel really underpowered from the factory, and a tune adds so much performance and driveability. It makes them way more fun to drive, and helps a ton with hauling, towing, or going uphill; without really affecting the MPGs. I can see how this is tough to justify with a brand new vehicle going somewhere without a whole lot of driving space though.

5) I have an under/in grill Cali-Raised light bar and it's awesome! Really lights shit up, but is hardly noticeable unless you look closely.

If you remote start, it's 30 min. If you start it the regular way? Your gas tank is your limit. I idled eight hours in a blizzard stuck on 77 back in 2018. BTW, you use a gallon every three hours idling. So 15 gal gets you almost two days.

 

I looked it up... my dude has only 16 miles of paved roads. Total.

 

The road system is surprisingly large in Adak, all things considered. There are lots more dirt and gravel roads besides just pavement.
