    I will admit I know very little about Tacomas in general. I am new to the tacomas. I purchased a 02 Tacoma Accesscab 4x4 with the 2.7L motor a few weeks ago. My question is in regards to the 01-02 model year Tacomas in particular. I have read on more than a few occasions posted on these forums that the 01-02 Tacomas are the best tacomas ever made. IF this statement is true what makes this two year run special?

    i dont know about the 2.7l but the 3.4L V6...these years were NOT TBW and the ebrake cable is set higher across the rear axle...among other reasons

    I had a 97 that I really liked. I like my 08 just as much, but it has to go 180,000 trouble free miles to be as good.

    it should also be noted that 02 was the beginning of the dcab option...and 98 was the beginning of the TRD options...

    FWIW, my 2000 Tacoma was the TOUGHEST truck I have enver been in. All the air time it had, and after years it was still tight and ran like new!

    X2 I beat the **** out of mine and all i ever had to do was get a new tranny, but i think that was due to the frame being bent....:)

    i abuse the ever loving piss out of my truck...and its still running as strong as the day i bought it

    it could use a timing belt/water pump but im not in the financial situation currently to do that...ive got a guy who will do it for free ive just gotta get around to affording the parts...:rolleyes:

    the only things ive ever torn up and HAD to replace was my skid and now a single CV axle

    My 02 is still running like a champ. I only have a little over 70k on it and have had no problems. I can't say I've beat it up but its been through some gnarly snow wheeling adventures. My opinion is that these 1st gens can take a beating and keep on running strong. I'm sure you'll be just as pleased with your new rig:D

    They were very focusd on toughness around that time. However thin-skinned (sheetmetal) they are-these trucks more than make up for it underneath. The frame is a box-ladder type w'9 x-members which means ZERO flex and in a collision NO give...the other car will absorb all the impact first-like it hit a rock. From what Ive learned from Chris4x4, these engines are absolutely bulletproof-not to mention an actual HEMI engine (Mopar owns that branding, so I assume that's why Toyota cannot brag it up) Im talking about BOTH the 3.4 AND the 2.7-have hemispherical heads, which means deeper breathing from zero for max offthe line torque. I know this is my experience. I love the power of the 3.4. I think it's totally adequate. The 01-04s IMO have a timeless style with tough body lines that you dont see anywhere else-when everything else has a "dubb city" or "transformers" look to it. Thats why I just cannot think of parting with this truck-it doesnt get older, it gets cooler.

    OK I was corrected by Chris so I will post here his corrections because I dont want to give false info. The hemi heads DO NOT help 'deeper breathing' they improve combustion efficiency. Also, ALL DOHC engines nowadays are hemi's. Sorry folks-I am not a professional-I just love my truck.

    LMAO!! Sorry I wasnt clear on that, Frank. :eek: MOST DOHC engines are a "HEMI" design. Suzuki, Mazda, and a couple of others use a "D" shaped combustion chamber, where as a hemispherical combustion chamber is "O". I havent torn into every engine, so Im sure there are others that I didnt mention.
