Hatteras in your example has a higher avg temp in winter solely than SD has all year. In the summer hatteras is give or take 5-10 warmer. Today your water temp is 59* Hatteras is 61*. There may have been a cold snap when you were there. Or it could be our ambient air temp is colder and winds can get really gnarly making you feel colder than SD, idk. But solely based on actual water temp data my statement stands water temps are warmer.

The average air temp in SD in the winter is much warmer than Cape Hatteras and that clearly is a huge part of the equation, it's going to hit 32 there next week vs a low of 51 here ...huuuuge difference

 

Seriously. I took a half day off last week and I almost shit myself from stress the next day. I worked every single holiday including Christmas and thanksgiving day last year. Luckily my employees did not have to. Fortunate to have the business, much more stressful on the other end of the spectrum…

I took a week off in October. Didn't go to the shop one single time. Stayed as far away as possible. Then spent 3 weeks getting everything straightened out again. Lesson learned.

 

See I could care less about air temp and that is a big difference I bet some days it's closer to a 30* swing. Since I don't surf but fish water temp is more important to me than air temp.
