Hello! I have an 06 Tacoma 4x4. It is old, 230k miles, but it is my work truck. I hear a clunking noise from underneath the truck when I am driving 20+ mph. It is a dull sound, like metal/plastic hitting each other, or like rocks hitting underneath the truck. It is completely random, happens driving straight on asphalt with no bumps. It really sounds like something is loose and banging around, but I have inspected and cannot find anything. It is hard to pinpoint the exact location of the sound, but it sounds like it is either underneath the cabin or in the rear. Does anybody have any idea what this might be? I recently got my leaf springs replaced under recall and noticed the sound when I picked it up and drove it home. I am taking it to Toyota tomorrow, but I doubt they will assume any responsibility, and it is somewhat unsettling hearing this sound on the highway. Thank you!

Take it back and tell them you didn't notice that noise before. If they didn't tighten something down or whatever, they need to fix this.

When toyota installed my replacement leaf springs one of them was cracked at the bushing.Similar noise.I replaced them with springs from HeadStrong and that fixed it.

Hey guys I figured out what it was. The issue I was having with my diagnosis procedure was (very stupidly): I thought the sound was coming from underneath the car, but it was coming from above! I am hard of hearing, when I had a friend ride with me, he quickly corrected me that the sound was coming from above the truck. Lo and behold, my roof rack crossbars were loose and were causing the clunking sound. I have now removed them. Big sigh of relief that it wasn't a major mechanical issue!
