My only addition would be that some filters, like Bosch Distance and NAPA Gold can go 10K miles. Synthetic media.

Anyone use any oil additives in their oil that they believe in strongly?
I worked auto parts a loooonngg time ago and the Prolong rep stopped by for a presentation one time. They would take this contraption with a bearing that was replaceable with a tray with whatever you would put in it, oil, Prolong, etc. and apply force with a lever onto this bearing. You could see a score mark or a groove in it when using just regular oil and with the Prolong, no score mark at all. I seem to remember the bearing would somehow spin as well.
I'm not sure how it translates when you're comparing apples to oranges like the steel bearing versus a main or rod bearing or piston ring but was interesting to see.
Maybe all the 2nd hand meth is fogging my memory too, who knows??

My opinion is, if there was an easy way to just put in an additive and *poof* dramatically improve the oil, why wouldn’t manufacturers (of engines and oils) just do that up front?

Because it may lower mileage by .1 mpg and damage their CAFE fleet numbers, and also because it may cause more catalytic converter failures on the margin of the emissions warranty window.

given the choice of spending money warrantying some cats vs. your engine not lasting 200k miles plus, what do you think they are going to choose ?

I just want to make sure I’m gathering all the available data, don’t want to limit myself to just one thread.

Next Friday. I'll change mine this week. Then return and ask if I went too long on time, too short on mileage and if I used the right products, viscosity, etc.

Bonus. If I have a shop do it, I'll confirm if I paid too much and if I used the right shop.

Will that fan the flames enough? :anonymous:

So, if a manufacturer thinks current oils are good enough to satisfy the customer base for longevity and additives damage cats, why would I put it in my crankcase?
