Seafoam

When is the best time to seafoam your truck to get the most out of the product? Right before an oil change? Where is the best place to pour the seafoam into?

Hahahaha I'm sure he would love a cookie, as do I. But I have used it a couple times and never seen any difference. Used it to clean out a old gas tank and it kinda worked.

 

I heard the best place to use it is through the air intake...

Edit: I'd use it before an oil change...so you can drain out any shit that gets free'd up

 

It's best to suck it through a vacuum hose.

This is what I do:
Wait until you have 1/2 tank of gas.
while the engine is idling, you pull a vacuum hose and stick it in the can and let it suck the seafoam out of the can until the engine starts to bog, then pull the tube out and give it a little throttle via the throttle body. Repeat until you've used about half the can, then pour the rest in the gas tank.

 

seafoam "suppose" to clean out dirty stuffs from your engine. i used on my small car and i can see smokes coming out foggy up the air when you step on the gas. doesn't hurt to let it sip a few. but one bottle cost you $10 or so.

 

yeah the vaccum line is the best spot for it. i did it to my 03 taco and alot of smoke was coming out of the tail pipe. it works good, my truck runs alot smoother.

 

i dribbled half into the vaccum line and put the rest in the gas tank....went for a drive and my truck was smoking like no other haha looks like it did it's job

 

I was always told not to put it in the oil, and saw firsthand what it did to my dad's Cherokee. Cleaned out all the gunk and it got jammed in other places. Killed his Oil Pressure sender, and caused main seel weeps. Great when sucked up in vacuum lines and gas tho.

 

I doubt the seafoam caused the main seal leak.

Jeeps pretty much all come from the factory with a leaky rear main seal. I think it's standard equipment when you buy it.

 

yeah seafoam is petroleum based, so it more than likely just cleaned the gunk off the leaking seal.. you should payed extra for the non leaking seal.. standard equipment sucks.. in the long run its worth it.

 

pull off the brake booster line.. that work the best!

i agree with not putting it in the crankcase. as a general rule of thumb, only oil goes in there, no goofy additives to water the oil down or thicken it up and no cleaning aganets. i do however like the vaccuum line and gas tank treatment. when it comes time for one of our vehicles to be treated ( once a year) i will run one can through the gas tank, then run one full tank with no treatment and then do a half can through the vaccuum line and dump the other half in the gas tank. i will run that tank to about 1/4 then fill up and change the oil. good for another year. my dad has been doing that since the eightys with all of his cars and passed that habit down to me. if anything its just something fun to do to the car that is harmless and something that reminds me of him.

 

After about 30 years of neglect or several hundred thousand miles. Though I've never seen any noticeable results from it.

But when I'm about to tear down a car for a rebuild or major internal engine service due to age and wear, I usually sea foam it. Can't say why. I'm impulsive.

Did it on a series rover a while ago, and recently a volkswagen. Ended up taking the heads off... looked as gunky as any engine ever. I believe it does nothing. It might unstick a stuck valve if you were trying to pawn off a busted car on someone. But its not going to wire brush your valve stems and nothing is going to clean your injectors while still in the car.

 

I am a great FAN of it..agree with macgvyer n coltsTRD.
Its important to add 1/2 can or less just ONLY idle for 10min or less and drain rightaway. Its a good idea to do one more oil change. Doing this procedure on a high kms/miles truck for FIRST TIME might be counter productive.

 

Have any of you seen this fix an IAC valve problem? I am almost positive that is what I have going on. Low idle on cold days, high idle after warmed up on warm days.

 

Why don't you just remove the IAC and manually clean it? More thorough.

 

I was told to add it to the gas to clear out a valve that got carboned up from someone putting on cheap plugs and wires?
