A/C on with Defrost

^^^ Yeah, of course I don't drive if I can't see, but I do need to get to work as well. I can't just call in everytime it's icy. I do stay safe though, I'm just talking out of frustration. I did find the fix for '10 models though, and I plan to do this this weekend.
I also did try the feet only position, and although warm air comes out the windshield vents, it is extremely weak in force.

 

^Oh in that case I'm sure a judge would understand. Once you explain you have a job I'm sure a judge will let you sue Toyota because you kept driving even though your view was not clear. Especially after you planned it. Fact is if your aware of the problem and continue to use the product it would become your negligence

 

Um, I said I'm just talking out of frustration. I'm not planning on having an accident or suing anybody. You know, like when someone says "I'm so mad I could kill you". Geez people.

 

Well thats not very smart either. So in other words you either have an anger problem or have no idea when to keep your mouth shut. If you ask an educated person if it is very smart to put in writing on a post that you want to kill someone, I am sure they will just laugh at you. Sorry that is just stupid too

I have a '10 off-road DC. my A/C light does not come on in either defrost mode. i can turn it on, but it does not come on by default.

It does however come on by default when you turn the temp to max cool........

 

^^^ It actually does come on, it's just that the A/C light does not indicate it is on when in defrost mode. Check your owner's manual, it is detailed in there.

 

Just finished this mod on my 05 DCLB 4X4. Really pretty simple other than getting the green wire connector out of the plastic plug. Tried jabbing paper clips, a long pointed all and just about every other pointed object I could think of into the small slot to release the green connector with no luck. I did not want to cut the wire even though my 16 son who was holding the flashlight kept urging me to get it over with it and just cut the wire. Finally took the all and jabbed it into the connector through the opening where the white retainer had covered and just pushed the connector out (with a little force).

Can't help but believe this will help my mileage to some small degree. I hope I am old enough and smart enough to decide if I need the AC running.

 

Completed the mod today, took all of 15 minutes, including testing!

I did this the other day. GREAT mod! Love it already. Defrosts the windshield much quicker now plus it seems as though I can leave on the "recirculate" when on defrost as well.

Edit: just went out and did that... but it kills the recirculate button. Is that what part of the aim is?

The thread changed topic and I didn't read like the last 4 pages.

So, I made it so the AC is toggle only but can not recirculate on any setting.

Wrong wire? I've got a 10 so the color was different but I took out wire 3.

 

Might be the wrong wire. Mine made it so the a/c doesn't come on and I can leave recirculate on with any setting including defrost (which is used to automatically kick off on)

 

The correct colors for the '10 are listed on page 8 (click the link below). I did it this morning and it worked great.

I didn't wire it to +12. Apparently that's different for the 10+?

as soon as the truck gets its new engine, I'll try it. Unless they buy it back.

 

Wow. This is an eye-opener. I've always engaged the a/c for the first few minutes of defrost, then disengaged it and left the controls set on mixed thinking the a/c was off. Does the a/c suck fuel even when the chill component is off? If so, I'm all about this mod. Thanks.

 

This does help your mileage, but there is another, more important reason the ac comes on with the defrost. When manufacturers started doing this it was because people were not using their AC during the winter. When summer came around and people went to turn on their ac the compressor had locked up from the internal rust, if it did manage to start the seals were dried out from not being used and when started they develop slow leaks, once all the freon is gone the compressor overheats and again locks up. If you do this mod you have to remember to turn your ac on at least a few times a month for about 10-20 minutes.
That said, I foudn the best way to avoid having to use the defrost at all is to keep the inside of the windshield clean. Once the thin film of dust, etc is gone It has to get down to about 45ish for me to use my defrost.

 

Just did it. Never could figure out how to get the pin released. I tried wire, jeweler's screwdrivers, spark gap wires, etc. Nothing seemed to work. Then all of a sudden the wire just released with nothing in the T-slot. Something I did must have worked but if you could provide more details on exactly how to release the pin, that would probably help others down the road.

This worked like a charm! I love it! Im ganna monitor my MPG's to see if it gets better...

I found out that if you get a small pin, I keep it up at the top of the bottom hole and push it in keeping the pin at the top, then while keeping the pin in there snug. pull on the wire a little and it should release.

 

I am not going to read 198 posts so flame away ... A/C in defrost mod to blow "dry" air onto windshield ....
