I finally got around to starting my transmission cooler upgrade project, but it appears the global shortages have gotten to me. I cannot find the LPD4454 cooler anywhere in stock. Saw on on ebay, ordred and then was told they actually didnt have one.

Can anyone recommended some alternatives that are aproximately the same size with the same LPD tech?

I might have to go straight up to a 4544 (2" larger), which has 3/8" barb fittings, as compared with the 4454 11/32 fittings. Anyone know the OEM barb fitting size on the stock cooler?

1/32's of a difference in barb size, you will be fine either way.

Running a cooler the size of a 4544 id probably recommend an inline thermostat, something like this https://derale.com/product-footer/fluid-coolers/thermostats-1/fluid-control-thermostats/13011-detail

Now that I am looking at Tru-cools website (https://trucool.com/products/tru-cool-lpd) It seems the 45XX series are not stacked plate, but fin and plate design. Not sure exactly which one is better, Stacked plate or Fin&Plate. At least they arent selling tube and fin.

They do, to an extent, with such a big area it still might cool too much.

I think I'll be fine. My pan temps sit at 134F in the winter. All Stock. I think regardless of cooler size, a fully warmed up engine will keep the fluid at least at that mark (as it probably does now). Plus I will be removing the stock cooler and running the aftermarket on in the same location.

Im leaning towards the LPD4589. Its a similar size and plate # as the 4454, just thicker.

I pulled the stock cooler and installed 4454 in its place. This link might help you out with that.

What’s the preferred operating transmission temp? I have the LPD4589 and although I think the low pressure bypass works well, I don’t put a lot of miles on my Taco, so it’s usually low mile trips and would like the transmission to warm up a little quicker, especially in the winter. The Derale thermostat will only open up after the temp reaches 180 degrees, is this ideal or too high of a temp? I know @gearchuncher has the operating temps on here somewhere, but I figured this information would benefit this thread.

I am in Canada gentlemen . I cant explain the massive mark up in cooler prices either ?
My supplier recently started selling parts to the general public .
Not sure why Amazon is sold out ?

As for operating temps ? I agree with the above statement 122-175 is the perfect temps for your trans fluid . If you are going over 200 -220 on a constant basis , consider an aftercooler to save the reagents in your trans fluid from degrading far before the recomended fluid change interval of 60K

The thermostat i linked to is always allowing some fluid to flow through the cooler. It starts to open more at 160*f and is fully open at 180*f. Pretty much exactly the temps optimal for trans temps.

Thanks! I live in socal, so I wasn't worried about over cooling the trans. I seen a 30 degree drop in temps after installing the cooler, but my truck was optioned with out the tow package so it did not have the aux cooler.

Is that a 30 degree drop when towing/moving at high speed, or traffic/4x4 crawling?

I have a Derale cooler with a fan. Still have it plumbed through the radiator, just because I live in Washington where its cold at night throught winter. My normal trans temp is usually 100 degrees above static temperature, which is pretty good for being on 35s/stock gears. Bone stock my tranny ran at 195-205, due to the trans thermostat. Trans tstat is now pinned open. Use the fan when wheeling which is nice. Always have been curious what my temps would be with bypassing the radiator, as the fluid wouldnt be sitting next to the ~195 degree rad.
