He doesn't seem to realize there is a world outside of the USA. Go anywhere else in the world and you'll find most 4WD guys run small diesels. Not big block American V8's!

The answer to this has two main components: 1) Whether or not you are a good enough mechanic to do this work yourself, and 2) How much money you have to use on the project.

But how else would everyone know he is cool if he was not bouncing off the rev limiter of his straight piped 454?

One of the coolest little crawling rigs I saw in person at an offroad park a few years ago was a built Suzuki Samuri with a diesel. That little f**ker was a billy goat

Good assumption but I dont bang my cousin
A more normal reply, but after a decade of wheeling and building multiple crawlers and my current "brocoma", my little 2rz's, turbo'd 2rz, 3.4l and current 3.5l have made plenty of power and "torque", all but my current truck turning 40-42" tires and one ton axles. They have had more than enough power, and I'd take twice the rev range any day. Never in my life have I thought "wow I really want a diesel so I could make this obstacle". Also, most of the guys running v8s have twice the power of our motors, atleast twice the money into their rigs, and they don't whine about fuel mileage like we do.

So you’ve never wheeled a diesel, and have never wanted to, therefore nobody should off-road them?

I mean you literally get twice the rev range, similar torque, more hp, and lighter weight from any built 4cyl, v6, or stock v8 gas motor, and yes, for much less money. Most 2005+ Toyota people are cheap anyways and dislike when prices go up on parts due to the current world situation, so yeah theres not even a thought about a complicated diesel swap that requires a significant amount of work and time.

I have not had a diesel wheeling rig myself, but over time the many rigs I have seen with a diesel in them, end up swapping back to a gas motor due to various reasons. I'm just saying gas is superior in almost every way besides fuel mileage.

Grab a 3.5 from a junk yard and keep it stock. If you want more power you can always get the Magnusson super charger, at least that was "factory" at one point. Best of both worlds on keeping it factory with more power??

The reasons they have ditched are:
    1. No high rev range
    2. Most are heavy
    3. Parts arent as common
    4. You get to run oddball trannies that are also usually heavy and big, Tacoma's (and other Toyotas) aren't big vehicles, so packaging becomes an issue and so does the strength of the frame if they are still running the stock frame up front.
    5. You can get more power per weight with any 4cyl, v6, or even aluminum v8s.
    6. Most 2.4/2.7/3.4/4.0s toyota motors are all reletively bolt in and straight forward swaps, and all reletively share the same transmissions/tcases.

You guys can vouch for diesels all you want and day dream about swapping them in, but until you guys do those swaps or provide any real advantage I dont see a reason for a diesel in a Toyota. If you want diesel and fuel mileage, do a swap, or go get a Gladiator or Colorado and lets hit some trails together and see whats up

Back to the OPs post, I would just swap another 3.5l in. These trucks (for 99.9% of people) are too much of a hassle to swap anything else in, since theres lots of electronics in them. Most doing v8 swaps ditch literally everything oem. You can't beat the reliability of an Oem motor, besides when you hydro lock them

Sure rev range and power are all good points.

But there’s more to it than that.
Like fuel economy and range. Thats not much of an issue in most of the US.

But if you want to get super super remote having a bunch of extra mpgs so you don’t have to carry a whole lot of extra fuel would be nice.

I can carry 35ish gallons of fuel in my 1st gen with a 2nd fuel tank where the spare tire used to be. I can get around 380 comfortable off road miles. I’ve stretched that in places like Northern Arizona. But it’s way more than enough for most places but it’s a nice safety buffer.

If I had a small diesel I could either double my range or halve the fuel I carry.

This doesn’t apply to many diesels and doesn’t belong in the diesel vs gas debate but…. as bonus points a 1KZ is fine for burning fryer oil in. I’m a chef. I have access to all the fryer oil I want. I could do lots of short trips mostly on fryer oil. Can’t do that with a gas engine ever.

^^^Exactly. Before you do anything else or spend $$$ on anything, empty all the water from the intake side, pull all the plugs and turn it over by hand a bunch of times. Then crank it with the starter for a bit. Then replace all the plugs and cross your fingers......You might get lucky....

Yeah worth a shot! Have hydrolocked a handful of motors due to oil in the cylinders and 7/8 of them have survived with no issues.
