Going in a different direction...again.

Found a Kohler for cheap.

Most of the shrouds have broke bolt down tabs.

I know a decent fabrication guy, so it works out.

It seems to run very well.

 

Absolutely nothing fit! Kohler and Onan have nothing in common except they both burn gasoline!

New motor mount bolt holes, muffler manifolds extended,. Lovejoy couple had to be McGyvered.

I didn't let it beat me!

This is why after the initial price shock of setting up my little Eastwood MIG 140 was quickly waned as I realized all the crap I can do with it.

If I was keeping this, I'd go that route.

It's gonna get a flush and fuel filters out of the tank and before the carb.

I grabbed a Stihl 55cc MS291 last week for $150 off FB Marketplace. Been playing with it today. I've never had a good saw, just the Poulan 2150 36cc in the vid I've had for 22 yrs. Fun stuff.

I grabbed a little oak out of the woods to play with using the Cub 3240 with forks

 

Dunno, I ain't doggin' Poulan at all. My friend had a very early 90's Poulan 16" that she ran the snot out of. It finally crapped out last year. I thought the carb just needed a rebuild. Bought a made in USA Stens kit for it. But after no success I found the cylinder walls were scored up. The amount of abuse that thing took was amazing. Replaced it with a Husquavarna 20", that I had to tune right out of the box for her.

 

Since I tuned the Poulan and set the H/L it's been a good little saw. It started on the first pull after sitting for months with 10mth old (non-ethanol) gas mix in it. It can't compare to the Stihl of course but we're talking about a $99 saw vs a $500 saw.

Funny thing is I grabbed a log out of the woods with the forks and didn't even know it was hollow until I got off the tractor seat. The Poulan cut that log as well/fast as the Stihl. For smaller stuff(within its 36cc capacity) it ain't no slouch.

I purchased a Stihl MS something 2 years ago. It was horrible. 10-15 pulls to make a brand new saw run was unacceptable. Took the carb apart and un leaned it. It starts on the 3-4 pull now after sitting 8 months. I'm happy with that.

I'd still have my previous Poulan if my brother wouldn't have ran straight gas thru it. ( He smokes a lot of weed). I'm not surprised he burnt it up. That Poulan was 25 years old with nothing more than gas/oil, bar oil and sharpenings. It owed me nothing.

 

Thanks. I will say this: My Poulan was a disappointment out of the box and for many years of ownership. I initially had a tiny McCullough Mac 10 that I put a 16" bar on. The 16" Poulan was less powerful than the Mac but the Mac was a PITA to keep running.

Along my years of Polulan ownership someone told me to file the hell out of the drags on the Poulan and I did that and it woke it up--it was much better. Then the ethanol gas had its way with it and it slowly became a PITA to start. I had a come-to-Jesus moment with it and bought some Chinese lines and filter/plug for it from Amazon and fixed the corn-gas damage to it, pulled off the limiter caps, and set the H/L properly.

It ran great, idled like it never did, and (with the drags filed) cut great. Weird that it took 18 years of ownership to make it a good saw. Makes me sad that most Poulan owners have a good saw in their hands that they will never realize.

 

I think we grow and learn.

Those things you listed above would have never crossed my mind when I was in my teens and 20's.

The internet was just starting out back then. Today's information availability is just amazing.

I feel no empathy for people that take their problem tools to a shop and complain about the cost of repairs. In fact, I'm actually elated.
Peeps like us can make some decent walking around money just by sitting in front of the computer and sipping a beer.
We are becoming more and more rare, so I have no issue charging my base rate of $125/ hr.
