    Hey all,

So I have had my taco for a little over a month and had no issues with it until last week. It starts up fine first thing but after a couple of stops (errands) it does this whiny thing. Mileage or drive time doesn't seem to matter. It's always the 3rd or fourth crank of the day.

My first inclination is that it's a bad battery by the sound, although, I have been fooled by my wifes car. It sounded the same and needed new plugs.

Dealer is like 50 miles away and without a code they won't get it in for another 3 to 4 weeks.

I'm going to head out to get a voltmeter if it'll crank lol. Anyone heard this before?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like it could be an issue with the starter rather than the battery. A few things to check would be the connections at the battery, the battery voltage when cranking, but from the sound I would still place my money on the starter. Good luck and keep us posted.

Have another person look under the hood while it is doing that, is the engine actually turning over. The belts and fan should spin. If they are not the the starter may be toast. It sounds like the starter motor is spinning but the bendix is not engaging. I would still get a voltmeter and see what the voltage is.

Here is a flow chart for battery testing...20200328_093811.jpg 20200328_093839.jpg

I agree. It sounds like the bendix clutch is not engaging.

Yep...Bendix is jacked. Could be a voltage issue. Put a tester on battery...see what voltage is. If 12.8V plus, it might be a connection issue between Batt and starter. BS regarding dealer saying no code, no service. They should work off your video and get on it pronto since it's a brand spanking new truck!

    On another note....

....it's a damned shame that you found this place because if you stay here, you'll be buying shit you never imagined buying for your new truck! RUN AWAY!!

Starter bendix not engaging. Good news is that it’s not a difficult/invasive procedure to replace. If you can’t get it replaced soon and it happens somewhere and u need to drive it, if u can give er a good smacking with a hammer.

Thank you all. I called another dealer a little further away. He said it sounded like something in the starter is not engaging. Hopefully they can see it first hand.

Is this just bad luck of a faulty part or the first thread to unravel of something else?

Fortunately they can see me on Thursday not 3 weeks out.

My thoughts exactly. In any other market I'd say bluff them by threatening initiating lemon law if they're not going to get it into the shop... but in this market they'd probably happily take the truck back so they can turn around and sell it.

Just minor issue with a part. Even in the best supply chains, a flaw will get through.

It should be an easy fix, and you should be solid for the life of the Taco.

Note that there are some reports of the starter motor itself going bad after being swamped in deep water crossings, but that is a different issue entirely.

How long from the time it DOESN'T start till the time is DOES start?

Still relating to the starter or Bendix, it might be heat affected. Again, loose wire to starter monkeying with voltage or wire to solenoid. I'm gonna guess super easy fix but NOT one you should have to do or wait weeks to get done.

Call the salesman that yoinked the money from your wallet and bend his ear with the issue regarding the wait to fix a BRAND NEW TRUCK. He can go to his Sales Mgr who can then go to the Service Mgr and get you in. Those guys are either golfing or fishing together and deal with shit like this all time but only for those that take this track. Squeak a little, get grease. I hang with a bunch of these dillweeds and spend lots of time on the water with them so I hear it all and have even had to take the path a lot back in my Ford days.

This +1. New truck, they should be on the way to pick it up or drive it there and make sure you get a loaner. Shouldn't have to wait until Thursday. It's okay to not be nice to the jabronies.

It's an overnight thing. I'll try it in the mornings and starts up like normal.

I generally don't like to be a tool to folks that I need to have an ongoing business realtionship with regarding things I am totally ignorant of. I think of the George Costanza and the johnson rod bit.

Based on that info, it is still a toss up between a battery issue or a starter issue. If the battery has a weak cell. It can show up after a few starts, the capacity drops causing a low voltage issue when trying to start. This low voltage then isn't strong enough to pull in the solenoid on the starter which engages the bendix with the flywheel.

Or the solenoid for the Bendix is faulty and has an intermittent open when warm causes the issue.

So the truck is DOWN until the next morning once it goes offline?! If I'm understanding that correctly, that's crazy! You don't have to be a tool. I get the concern but you should be pressing the issue. I wouldn't worry about alienating them. They hate all of us already so you're not burning any bridges.

I'd raise holy hell - tell that dealer to come pick up the truck and drop off a loaner of equal or better value until it is fixed. Doesn't sound like a major
issue but the dealer should be jumping through hoops to make you happy.

I agree let the dealer take care of your situation you have warranties and road side assistance. Push the green button on your ceiling that says SOS they will send a tow truck over and take her to the dealer, you can go for the ride and if they want to keep it then get a loaner to go home with. You have your rights man you paid big $$$ for your machine. Good luck.
