I’m looking to swap my stock motor for a reliable engine for a full long travel rig that I’m trying to start building.

what is the best motor I should look for?

I’m personally open to options. I don’t like to buy cheap stuff that’s not going to last. I’m looking for longevity. If I had to give a specific price I’d probably say 4k.

4k would be a very cheap engine swap

I cool with buying something used with low miles on it, but im not exactly educated on any type of brand new engines.

Lexus IS 350 3.5L motor. Steering might be tricky though. 306HP. These engines pull pretty hard.

LS 5.3L, but even if you purchased a low mileage engine and trans, gauges and fab work will be costly unless you do it yourself.

the 4.0 is already a very reliable engine... anything else is going to be grief because of the custom work involved.

you speak of long travel, whats your budget? Real life doesn't take Forza bucks

The expensive stuff that comes with engine swapping a vehicle isn't even the engine itself. The transmission, transfer case, custom driveshafts and the electronics to support it will cost more than the engine. Add to it all the little stuff like an exhaust and all the mounts/cross members and the cost climbs even more.

If it were me -- I'd get a gutted truck from a salvage yard and just start from scratch. All you need is a frame and cab.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
$4k all said and done? (Meaning buying the parts and covering all labor to have a reliable runner.) Then you're buying a used engine and most likely doing the great majority of work yourself.

He makes a good point. I have total chaos LT on my truck I think my final invoice from TC was around $11,000 and install was $3700. Doing LT isn't cheap and FWIW I've never once wished my truck had more power. The stock 4.0 is plenty fast with a good suspension.

This is just another thread about a motor swap that will never happen.

2JZ or nothing and don’t forget the NOS, buster.

Edit: also consider the Gallo 12 or 24.

2nd for a 3.5L Eco boost, I've slowly been collecting parts to swap my 71 F100 over to one when I find the right donor truck
