That's not usually how the Government works, they will simply say your a free to use your ICE vehicles but we are putting a $25 per gallon tax on it.

Lol...I know, it's just the mentality of some. I'm being dramatic in my scenario but to some I can bet they think this will happen.

I've read this thread. I was hoping that my thinking would change but it hasn't. My gripe is that I don't like to be "forced" into a technology that really is not ready for the big stage. What I mean by forced is by higher gas and oil prices. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not we are (and have been) driven by oil prices. Certain "entities" in this country have done things that have driven the gas prices up when they didn't need to be driven up. Whether it was intentional or not is debatable but we all are seeing it and feeling it immensely in the wallet. Now I do understand that things change and I am certainly not against it. All the things stated in this thread about the metrics that need to be reached for EVs and such to become the dominant mode of transportation will "probably" be reached. When they do, I am 100% on board. But life is full of compromise. I've been married for 25 years and I don't get there without compromise. Why can't a roll out of well thought out, and very reasonably priced PHEVs be that compromise until we can build the infrastructure and perfect the technology to reach those magics metrics? That way EVERYONE, including the not so well off, can benefit because, to be honest, I'm reading a lot of comments in this thread from people who own EVs (or multiple EVs) and for most people (especially now in this economy) buying one of these vehicles just isn't practical (or even possible) So in the mean time those not so well off people are going to get absolutely hammered by fossil fuel prices. And not only in their cars by the way, but in every other way possible because as like I said, we will be an oil driven economy for the foreseeable future.

    LOL

And... there are 2.59 million people in the borough of Brooklyn. Much of which does NOT have garages, or driveways. Or even parking garages. Most of the public garages present won't have even a 120v outlet.

That 'unplug your vehicle and do stuff' workflow isn't going to work for say, 2/3rds of those people.

That sounds like a winning political platform, especially among the poorer folks who need to drive places to work.

Oh, and I /do/ own a plug in (Yota) and try to do as much in EV mode as possible. In town I basically never use gas. And the mower and blower are the ego 56v ones.

Or even cars. Only 44% of households own cars in Brooklyn. Also over a quarter of those 2.59 million people in Brooklyn aren't even old enough to have a DL.

"But but they could just rent an EV for the (rare) car trips" is the standard excuse.

Like I said, though - (B/PH)EV trips might work for folks with a garage or a driveway. DCFC is fine for the occasional road trip (but the prices are extortionate - and installing moar charges does nothing to help that one).

If you only need 50 miles a day, does it really matter if you're toting around an extra 200 miles of battery or an ICE? The argument against BEVs is that, in a pack limited world, you can make 3 20kWh PHEV for the packs necessary for 1 60kWh BEV.

YMMV. I could have gotten a Y instead of the R4P. I'm not trading in my Taco until the frame rusts out from underneath it (No, they don't salt here).

Well there's plenty of ways to charge an EV in Brooklyn for those that choose that route.

I looked into the Mach e previously, not a whole lot I didn’t like other than I live in the woods of Vermont and do quite a bit of long distance traveling to Maine. Once Toyota comes out with that little electric fj I’ll think about getting one of those as a second vehicle

The 'Compact Cruiser' seems to be high on the wish list. I have an ICE Cruiser and would take an EV tacoma but it's a cool looking rig.

Like what... illegally wiring in to a street light?

With that being said I imagine city dwellers DGAF about range since their favorite matcha latte shop is just a mere 10 blocks and 20 minute commute.

Man, I don't think you get "it". The internet is NOT for compromise and reasonableness as you are suggesting... neither is government anymore.

No fun in any of that!! :bananadance:

Even if others had not fully debunked your statement, there is the fact the even "coal" powered EV are cleaner than ICE.

Yes, yes I am. Thank you

I have 10 solar panels on my house, but that's no where near enough to charge my Tesla. Not saying it couldn't be done, but it would take days for a charge.

Gas prices vary all the time. I highly, highly doubt that any "entities" in this country could even wipe their own ass, let alone manipulate the energy market in such a way as to make EV's more popular. Even if they could Tesla is the only company making EV in any numbers (and they are not popular with those "entities"), so there is very little chance they've done anything to help them.

EV's are early in their adoption stage, and in HIGH demand. In a capitalist economy manufacturers have no incentive to make affordable EVs. Why cut into profit when every high priced car made is sold in seconds? In time the EV market will normalize and used EVs will become more affordable, and car makers will begin selling to the middle and then bottom of the price categories. While all that is happening, charging networks will be built out, EVs will become common, and people will just accept them as just another car. A similar path can be seen with diesel. When I was young diesel was for semi-trucks. Then GM started selling their diesel cars in the 80's. Those cars were steaming garbage, but after a while more and more diesel vehicles were on the road. Today it is a rare gas station that doesn't have diesel at the pumps. My bet is EVs will follow the same path. We've already seen the garbage stage of EVs, and if you look around there are more and more EV charging is popping up.

Depends on the MPGe and the measured metric, tbh. 1:1, sure, maybe.

If we're talking say, West Virginia (88.7% coal) a BEV does worse in CO2 than a Non-plug-in Hybrid (per https://afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_emissions.html)

Obviously a coal plant produces way more SO2 than a gasoline engine (no Sulphur in the gasoline). ICE(and non-plug hybrid) makes more NO2 (you just can't scrub that much in a car vs a stationary power plant).

I'm going to count non-plug-hybrids as 'fancy ICE' though, while PHEVs in EV mode count as electric. And obviously exact models matter - few things beat out the Prius Prime (which gets almost double the MPGe as a R1T).

Pocket hydro is interesting. Doesn't take a lot of head to make a steady 2-3kW generation. The tesla peaks it's L2 is 11.5kW though.

For camping use, you might be able to put 2-3kW of panels on a dedicated camper trailer, while not enough to charge nightly, 6 hours of good light might get you about 30 miles of range a day.
Because they're highly subsidized. I'm not turning down $10k (7.5k fed+2.5 state) worth of subsidies.
