The 97 Tacoma I bought recently has a plastic bedliner.... I've heard some people say that those bedliners can cause rust to form on the bed surface, is there any truth to this? Has anybody has this issue?

It's true.moisture gets in between and rust forms.pull out the liner and put a thick coat of wax on. And leave it on.

They can if you leave them on forever and never check. They rub paint off your bed, but so does putting cargo on the paint, you just need to check underneath once a year. I had one for ten years in my ranger, just rubbed a little paint off, never had a lick of rust.

Trying to avoid putting too much money into the truck, its not exactly a sound investment. If I can keep rust away without spending money to do it, then I will. Rhino line isn't cheap.

Haven't looked into those too much, but it seems like I've heard that they are kind of phony and rub off pretty easy. I need something that will hold up with a shovel scraping against it all the time

Well if the liner is rubbing paint off as it shakes, vibrates and so on won't it be rubbing off the rust also, so no fowl no gain!

Herculiner is like 80 bucks for a kit to cover a whole bed. I used it as a flooring patch subsitute-Diamond plate flooring covered with black Herculiner. Worked great.

Do NOT get it on skin or clothes you like tho....

I made the mistake of not wearing gloves when I herculined my bed, and my hands stayed black for like two weeks

remove the plastic bedliner and spray on some rubberized rockerguard or roll on some herculiner or duplicolor then put the plastic bedliner back in over top of it,youll never have to worry about bed rust issues again.

this is what i found when i took the plastic bedliner out of my 98'. where the bedliner rubbed was just clean metal, no rust. if all you are going to do is put wax on it i wouldnt even waste my time taking it out.
