Garage Shop: Tools

You folks that work out of your truck, do you bring your tools inside every night? Do you use modular tool packing systems? Why do people pay so much for Modular organizational bins like Milwaukee Packout, Husky, Ridgid, DeWalt TSTAK or Tough System???


I have a lot of canvas bags right now and hard case tool boxes, I am wondering if there is an easier way or if I am just getting old and ornery.

 

I have old large GI tool bags for my electrical and plumbing tools. I grab from the garage before going to a job. Most of my daily tools stay in one drawer of my Decked system. I do have a few packouts for thing like small parts to organizing my sandpaper.

 

I toss the blow molded cases or nylon bags pretty much right off the bat.

The nylon bag/cases may get reporposed, but the blow molded cases are usually sent to the recycle bin.

If you use the tools as often as a pro, the latches on the blow molded cases will be broke pretty quick.

Caring for the tools is important, but if they can't stand being stored out of their case, they are really not that durable, inmho.

 

Ordered a couple of drawer organizers. Not sure I like them yet. They seem a bit clunky and not quite as useful as advertised, but I'll try them for a bit.

Honestly, I liked your before better.

 

Completely agree. They are a bit clunky and take up more space than just the tools alone. I think that the wrench organizer is probably more useful than the screw driver tray. I'll try them for a bit. May even cut them apart to get rid of the non used compartments.

Will report back when I find a configuration that works better.

I'd recommend staying with them. Maybe not pretty, maybe clunky, but you'll be able to tell at a glance when a tool is missing!
That can be invaluable for many, many reasons.

 

Hey fellas, thoughts on a replacement floor jack. I have an old low-profile HF model that i used on my Bimmers. It's leaking oil and i can't find replacement or repair parts. So i was thinking it's time for a new one. Thoughts?

 

The new harbor freight Dayton jacks are supposed to be really nice. They were so nice that snap on sued them lol. The low profile, long reach Daytona jack would be my top pick if I was in the market for a new jack

 

Pay attention to the lifting height in the specs.

 

yes get ones you will be able to use with a lifted truck. think the Dayona i got is 23-24inch lift with 3inch low maybe?

 

Update: It's being delivered on Tuesday.
They gave 3 Tuesdays as options at 6pm, with a 2 hour window. They will call to schedule their intended time the day before.
This pleases me greatly.

Anyone have a preferred drum brake spring compressor plier they recommend?

 

I have tools similar to below, got them from NAPA probably 35 years ago, I'm sure they still carry them.

Looks like HF has a set for about $15, probably not pro grade but for fine for occasional use.

 

I don’t like the pliers, they don’t work for the equipment I work on, not enough room for the equipment I work on.
I have used one like this for years, along with the double ended cup tool shown above for the retaining spring
