me too. I use Amsoil 5W30 ASL (the 25,000 mi. stuff) paired with a Napa Gold filter (same as Wix Gold) , I change the filter at 5,000 miles and go around 15,000 mi. on the oil.

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 EP (EP = Extended Protection which is the 15,000 mile bewteen drains (gold top) version). I generally drain at 10-12k. I think synthetics still are clearly superior for extended mileage between drains. I now have 217k on my truck.

I don't get it. For years, car makers have been telling us to change oil every 3k mi. They frowned on the idea going past 3k. Now they tell us 5k & 10k. Even if synthetics are superior, what about the oil filters? Have they been redesigned to go 10k, much less 5k? I've owned several Toyota's in the past, and have done my own oil changes. I haven't noticed any significant changes in them. Same package, same filter. Neither is there any mention on the filter package regarding high mileage use. They are the same ones I used back then. Is it really designed to go 10k? Maybe 5k perhaps. All that dirty oil in the engine for that long of a period seems harmful to me.

How many of you notice the engine runs much smoother with a fresh oil change? I certainly do. But once it starts to get at about 2500-3000 miles, the engine starts idling rough. Even with synthetic oil I notice it.

I have free maintenance on my 2010, but I pay an extra $20 for synthetic oil. I do believe synthetics are superior (or maybe it's just marketing) but what about the filters? Are they trying to ween us off dino oil cuz it is becoming extinct as well?

Currently, we consume much more oil than can be produced. Oil is becoming such a rare commodity, that the big oil companies are being forced to go deep into the ocean, at great risk & expense, to extract it. Why else would they go to such great risks for offshore drilling? Inland oil is being rapidly depleted. Unfortunately, it is getting to the point where it may not be cost effective for deep sea oil drilling. Some of you are probably saying: "What about Alaska?" Even if we drill in Alaska, the amount recovered would be insignificant compared to what is currently being used. It won't & cannot help with the current oil shortage. The Saudi's are aware of this predicament and have therefore made huge investments into solar energy. Their sun baked deserts have huge quantities of solar panels throughout their vast deserts. The problem with solar energy? Distribution.

Oil reserves are quickly being depleted. That is why the U.S. went to war in Iraq. The U.S. wants control of that oil. So long as there is oil in Iraq, the U.S. will remain in Iraq.

I'm sorry for being off topic guys. Forgive me. I don't know what got into me. Too much coffee maybe. :facepalm:But, it's something to think about.

Back to my original question: Have the oil filters been redesigned/improved for such high mileage?

It's the flatter wallet after an oil change...your butt sits even on the seat so it feels smoother.

x2! If your noticing a smoother running engine after oil change, then your senses must be superhuman sensitive or perhaps.................;)

From what I have seen in oil studies the M1 EP is good for 15k miles and they recommend an oil filter change at 5k. In other vehicles I have used M1 EP and will run it 7-10k miles between changes.

ONLY if they determine that oil was the cause of a failure. They can not void warranty on anything not directly affected by the oil...like,say, transmission or alternator or ECU... because you use extended drain intervals.

If anyone can relate an oil-related engine failure in any engine with less than 300K miles it would sure be interesting to know what the circumstances are. Most likely it would be due to chronic lack of service (like 30-40K miles without changing and/or a turbo).

You do NOT have to use 'Toyota genuine oil'. You DO have to use oil that meets the specification level (weight, API SM or SN and GF-4 or GF-5) they give in the manual or TSB's. You can be assured all major manufacturers make oils that meets it...including Valvoline and Pennzoil (Penn Platinum is a most excellent oil).

    I can't believe what i'm reading?
Just because it says so on the bottle of the brand of synthetic oil ur using you believe it?
How do you guys really know whats in that bottle ur pouring in ur engine?
There are food and drug laws knowing what food or drugs you put into ur mouth won't harm you, but there are no laws with synthetic oil.
That synthetic oil you are using may be made from recycled road tar, or used french fry oil.
There is ONLY ONE brand of synthetic that lists on the back of the bottle its ingredents.
The general rule on a full synthetic is every single molecule of oil must be exactly the same, but they don't have to say what!
I would NEVER pour recycled road tar in my engine!

^^^^ Really. There are laws to state what a company can say in their marketing, and these state what constitutes synthetic oil. Also you cannot sale recycled any product without stating such. If anything you stated were true there would be some proof and big settlement already paid. NOW GTFO.

BartStar, the benefits of synthetic oil are that the hydrocarbon chains are longer and last longer before they get broken up into shorter lengths with use.

Looking at the "ingredients" on the back of a bottle seems pointless without a background in organic chemistry and lubrication engineering and a lot of other (proprietary) information on processing.

FWIW I have been using Mobil 1 in all my vehicles since the early 1990s:

My current 2006 Tacoma has 222,222 miles as of yesterday. ~10,000 miles between drains. No problems, runs like new. Mobil 1 EP 5W-30 from day one.

I just traded in a 2001 Sequoia last week with 200k miles on Mobil 1. ~10,000 miles between drains. No issues. (and I put Mobil 1 in the new(er) 2007 Sequoia yesterday.

My 2000 Tundra was traded in with 179k miles on it with Mobil 1. No issues. Regular Mobil 1 5W-30.

My 1993 Jeep Cherokee had 252k in it with Mobil 1, no issues. ~7500 miles between drains. Regular Mobil 1 5W-30.

A couple of other vehicles in there as well, but these are the high mileage ones.

I think about any of the synthetics will perform well (much better than dino oil).
