The 2.7 is slow but fun to drive with the 5 speed

Lol the 3.5 is best suited as a Camry engine

    Stock-ish
My 2rz would push my 40s and tons down the road just fine. Could cruise at 70mph in 3rd/4th gear and get 15mpg  Doubted the truck that motor was in was fairly light compaired to a Tacoma. Now when I turbo'd the 2rz, she ripped. Could chirp the 40s on dry.

Love my 3.5l, after running a 20r, 22r, 22re, 3.4, 2rz, and turbo'd 2rz in the past. Nice and quiet motor, and scoots pretty good with 35s and stock gears. Can get gas mileage up to 17-19 on the highway with the typical bro weight added.

Yeah it's not a bad engine, I think most of the complaints people have stem from the auto trans and its programming. I'd definitely get the manual if I were gonna buy a 3rd gen.

The 4 cyl was the 2TR-FE starting in 2005. Same displacement but totally different engine AFAIK.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It is kinda like Boobs some like them Large some like them small.

As long as you like the boobs I mean engine and it does what you want it really does not matter.

I need 4 x 4 to get out in the winter I need a Truck to haul and tow lighter cargo I have another Truck to get Serious.

If I cared about fuel mileage I most likely would have a small VW diesel . We don`t talk about that it did not work well!

Like Welding Machines I can have A Miller Big Blue 400D or a Miller Bobcat Diesel it all depends on what works in your application

The 5 speed and the 2.7 isn't bad...Your pic reminded me of what a buddy use to tell me when we rode bikes.

It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast vs riding a fast bike slow.

I think part of the beauty of these trucks is they have everything you need nothing you don't. How many people in those hopped-up Brodozers actually need all that power and torque?

I'd just buy a sports car if I wanted to go fast.

The 2.7 is fine for puttering around town, making home depot runs, etc. I haven't towed with mine, but it definitely falls on its face climbing grades on the interstate.

Also, in 4x4 xtracab trim, I'm not sure there's much of an advantage for fuel economy over the v6. My speedo reads high on 265/70/r16 tires, and even at that rate, I almost never crack 20mpg...more like 17-18 mpg around town. True mpg, correcting for the speedo error is probably closer to 16.

That said, it's fairly reliable, easy to work on, and there's no timing belt changes to worry about.

My 2.7...I don't know if it's the header or the motor has been into but it's not terrilbe on the interstate...if there is a pretty good grade you gotta be running at least 75 to maintain speed lol

I bet you're a bit more aggressive about keeping the RPMs up than I am. To echo an earlier comment, I have driven other 4 cyl cars with manual transmissions, and the tacoma seems to require more downshifting than I'm used to.

Bought my 98' xtracab with a 2.7 manual three years ago with 262k on the odometer and now about to turn 285k.
Looked long and hard, wanted a stick and was thinking a 3.4. Finally found this one and couldn't be happier. The little guy is tight, rust free a d runs like a champ.
I'm in Alaska so lotsa climbs on out of town trips for fishing and she does just fine. It's wearing 31's but I just bought a OME lift that I haven't put on yet and may go bigger on the tires...at that rate I would regear.
I have a 1 ton dually that I go to for hauling the camper and/or multiple toys along with but the Lil Toyota isn't in my driveway for that work and it does what it's meant to beautifully in my case.
I know these motors go and go but I'm currently on the lookout for a replacement I can rebuild and have ready on the engine stand when it's needed...in 3 weeks searching I have 1 lead and that's with ads up in a couple places. I've had a couple opportunities to buy a 3.4 and do the conversion but it honestly doesn't interest me and I'll hold out for another 2.7....to each his own but I'm beyond happy with the 4 banger.20220215_114952.jpg 20220215_114941.jpg

Love my '96 2.7 5-spd. Plenty of power, and has 418,000 trouble-free miles on it with never having an engine cover off.

Another big ole Dodge blew by me and into the gas station, today. I’ve been looking at a half tank of gas for the last two weeks. I might fill up next week or maybe not. To each their own8D1EA204-54DB-457F-B8CF-B8A093E1037A.jpg
