    https://www.leisurewheels.co.za/blogs/auto-lockers-work/

A locker forces both wheels to spin equally on either side, both get equal power while the locker is engaged. When your diff is open (not locked) the wheel with the least amount of traction gets the power

Hence why lockers are great for off-roading where you're constantly climbing uneven terrain, which would make an open diff send power to the wheel with no traction and leave you spinning your tires or stuck.

Limited slip differentials do the same thing but to a lesser extent...rather than sending equal power to both wheels it sends some. Better for street/road manners but a locker is better offroad. Both are better offroad than an open diff

Tru Trac isn't a locker, it's a torsen style posi. If they're breaking CVs, it's not the lockers fault.

The correct term is helical gear limited slip. But most lay person will call it a "locker"

I don't know anyone that would call a limited slip diff a "locker".

Regardless....For a dd, I would not use one personally.

I've seen the True Trac get referred to as a locker quite a bit on this forum, guessing some people just think of Detroit as making lockers and lump it into the locker category

I suppose so. I just would have thought anyone inquiring about one would have atleast googled true trac before asking questions about performance. It states on the eaton web page that it is not a locker. Again, I personally havn't heard anyone call it a locker.

Did not refer to it as locker, referred to it as torsen style posi. Which is helical gears rather than clutches.

OK...I still haven't pulled the trigger on the diff yet.

I've been doing some research and I'm learning a lot about LSD's and lockers and different brands and different options.

A couple of you guys, and other people on the web, have said that the front diff is more fragile than the rear, and a some guys here have suggested the "selectable" option for the front, but I can't justify that expense for what I use my truck for now although it does seem like the wise option for those who need it. Others have suggested the Detroit True Trac which seems like a good deal except I'd be putting mine on the front which I really don't want to do, based solely on what others have suggested regarding breakage and my necessity at this point.

I'm outside Orlando so we don't have snow, or freezing roads, or hills or rocks or mountains. We have sand. Some dry, some swampy, some packed, some loose, but when it's all said and done I'm not going to be doing a lot of rock crawling. Just mostly light off road. I've used the stock 4WD on the truck for years and never had any problems. But the lure of the west and adventure always seems to be calling and the pictures some guys post on here make want to hop in the Dirtmobile and give it a shot out there.

Anyway...I know that True Trac can be installed in the rear diff, but does anyone know how difficult that is to install?

I'm a pretty handy guy but at this point I really don't want to venture into rebuilding differentials if I don't have to. I think I'm looking more for a "plug and play" option.

If you've never installed a carrier before, it's difficult. There is bearing preload and backlash which needs to be measured. Adjusting those 2 using shims at the bearings. Truetrac front and rear would be excellent in the sand.
