Oil burning after new PCV valve

I’ve never replaced a functioning PCV, there’s nothing time or mileage based to warrant it. It’s a cheap enough and easy enough part to diagnose if/when it fails

 

That's a perfectly valid and sensible approach. I prefer preventive action over corrective action, probably because I'm a paranoid bastard when it comes to my vehicle.

 

For components that have a time based failure mode id agree. The PCV valve is just a spring operated valve there’s not much to fail unless it gets clogged. If your vehicle doesn’t have excessive blow by you won’t need to change it almost ever.

 

I've never fixed a car with a pcv valve. Usually the hose going to it rots out and starts sucking air, but the valves rarely fail

 

I have 232k miles and never changed the valve. Had no idea it was even warranted.

 

It's not blue smoke. It's like white smoke. I'm assuming there is still a good amount of oil in the intake being burned off.

 

Nope it was definitely a bad part. Changed it and it does run much better so I will not reinstall the old valve. And it's definitely supposed to be changed. My buddy changed his on his 234k mile truck and it instantly ran better.

 

PCV's can cause oil burning but its not common, especially on Toyotas.

Easy way to see how much blowby is in the engine is remove the oil cap while its running. If it sounds like raw exhaust, no PCV can save you.

Typically on an older engine with low miles, I'd say the rings are gummed up.

 

White smoke at start up is normal. If it’s always blowing white smoke, it is likely antifreeze. ie blown head gasket. But, you can rule that out quickly if your coolant level doesn't drop. As has been noted. Top everything off and keep a close eye on the levels. Replace the pcv valve if you kept the oem.

The oil change interval is 5K miles and not 20K.

20k = 2 oil changes @ 10k miles

 

Thats what I was going to say. A faulty part. I just replaced mine because of lousy idle, and it cured it. I replaced the one in my wife's Subaru that was drinking oil for breakfast, and it cured that also. I don't think they need replaced every 30K, but it's not a part that should be ignored also. It's a worthy cheap tune-up.

 

What 2nd Gen has a 10k oil change interval?

Also, my vote is that the OP isn't burning oil and that the smoke he is seeing is condensation because it is cold.

I replaced mine, because I like spending money and replacing parts for no reason. Being a smartass. I also replaced the hose and got rid of the spring clamps replacing them with worm gear hose clamps.

Grease. I’ve had them strip or stick several times. So I put a little on the band, open and close it, clean off the excess, then put it to use.

 

I would clean the factory one and re-use. Can of carb cleaner,and as log as it rattles afterwards it's good to go. If you still have an issue after,then you've got bigger problems.
