Gas prices aren't that high...for now, and the price of gas (and its easy availability) has at times seen periods of great volatility, both up and down in the last 55 years, that I've seen.

There were gas shortages, gas rationing and long lines in 1973 and 1974 and again in 1979.
The speed limit was signed into law at 55 mph nationwide in 1974.

In the 1960's, "Gas wars" brought the prices way down, under 30 cents per gallon.

In 1978 I remember paying 55 cents per gallon filling up my 1966 Ford.
It shot up to 87 cents in 1979 and kept going up for a couple more years. $1.30ish in 1981.

99 cents in 1999 was nice.

I was 30 miles outside of Los Angeles last week and paid $4.69/gallon.

It's around $3.75/gallon near Portland, OR right now.

Gas near me, near Philadelphia, near many refineries, is at $3.55 gallon. last week it was $3.25. Here in NJ we have full serve too so that's more overhead. It's definitely regional and obviously demand is it at highest for gas in decades. The OPEC guys need to fuel their mega Yachts so they don't mind the high prices.

Can't honestly debate the subject of gas prices without getting into violating the the policies of this forum. So that's that.

High gas prices (I don't think they are too high yet) are a (small) disincentive to drive my inefficient truck. I'm likely going to get a hybrid for most of my daily driving once used car prices normalize somewhat.

Many good points being made on this thread and it seems to me there are 3 points of view on this.
    1. Yes, I think EV's are the way to go....
    2. No EV for me....
    3. The bugs are not worked out yet but....

I am a 3 and believe EV's will be excepted more and more as the tech evolves for charging times and the availability of open, working chargers, are wherever and whenever one needs one as compared to getting gas.
I live rural but do travel across the midwest and I have never even seen a charger when stopping to eat or gas up. I know there most likely are chargers there, but I have never needed one, and I was not looking for one either. Once there are tall lit signs advertising charging rates etc. like gas prices, it will be time for me to think EV if I am still driving by then.
For now, we have a 2016 Tacoma OR for truck stuff and we just picked up a 2022 Rav4 Hybrid for everything else. Paid MSRP for it but got a ridiculous trade in for a 7 year old Equinox so it worked out great. Feeling all set up for the planned rising gas prices until the EV saga plays out.

'PHEVs are the best of both worlds' and 'Yota has the best one on the market right now' :p (You forgot that one)

You don't need a charging station when you have a garage or driveway that will fill the batteries full for your daily drive. You don't need to worry about chargers for long runs because you have a fuel tank and an ICE. Those charging stations are crazy expensive anyway, and literally cost more per mile than just filling the tank and getting hybrid MPGs on the engine.

Obviously this is a Toyota Tundra. But this gives you an idea of what you could expect from an EV Tacoma. As the Rivian is comparable in size to the Tacoma.

The Rivian is a beast, no way is it comparable in size to a Tacoma. Photos are of Rivian spotted in San Diego "Little Italy"thumbnail-20.jpgthumbnail-25.jpg

I paid $4.69 yesterday for my Tacoma. Tomorrow I gas up my 25' RV for a trip to desert trip below Julian Ca.

It’s a couple inches larger in most dimensions than a DCSB Tacoma and smaller than a full size truck.

Just added 200 miles range at the Tesla supercharger in scripps ranch supercharger while I shopped for food at vons. Luckily older model x =free juice. tomorrow off to costco to top off tank of taco. Wish they sold diesel for my 25 foot motorhome. I’ve seen a light green rivian in town, nice looking truck.

Hybrids are good - but they are the worst of both worlds as well as you are carrying two propulsion systems… this is what I dislike. I want to simplify and increase clean efficiency. (AND also - I do not want to give money to anyone in petroleum business any longer…). PHEVs don’t quite get there.

crazy expensive eh? Might need to check your math there…

Many chargers are free… many other look to simply recoup energy cost… can you say that for gas - ever?

Some do charge to make a profit - but I’d struggle to believe ANY would be near or more than the gasoline equivalent… they simply would not get used by anyone!

I paid full fare from central coast to LA at Tesla’s supercharger recently (A hired model 3). I charged only on free chargers while in LA… 380 miles round trip - and let’s say some 50 miles while in town.
I paid about $9.00 for charging this is including all supercharging for the FULL round trip.

Now - please let us know how far you can go on $9.00 of fuel?

Just got back from a 2,700 mile road trip in a Tesla. I saw about 10 Rivians out in the wild. They were going the other direction so I didn't get much of a look at any of them. Other than the funky head lights they would be hard to tell from every other pickup truck on the road.

On a price to travel perspective I took a similar trip in January in my Tacoma and tracked the cost of gas/mile vs KWh/mile in the Tesla. Long story short the tacoma cost 20 cents/mile vs 10 cents/mile on the Tesla. Supercharging was about 3X more expensive than home charging, but that metric is kind of pointless if you're in the middle of nowhere you pretty much have to pay what they want for supercharging. (not much different than buying gas while traveling, see picture)

Define free. Cuz we are ALL paying for it.

Cool. Any choke points while charging? Like having to wait for an open charger? I suspect most spots don't have that problem.

    Really?

    Life must be very difficult…
Still, I think you might get there on your own…

    good luck!

I only had to wait for a charger once, about 200' from where that picture was taken. It was an 8 stall super charger on the California/Nevada border. It was about 5 minutes, certainly faster than waiting in line at Costco on a Saturday to buy gas. And, by the time I left there were 6 open chargers so I just had a case of bad timing. I love back roads and we spent a good amount of time on 2 lane highways around Sequoia National Park and Death Valley. Charging was never an issue. I did have to plan a little bit more than with the Tacoma, but it didn't change in any meaningful way where we went.

I'm being genuine, but your deflection shows me you already know that electricity isn't free or "easy" to come by and just throwing this out there... cost of maintenance....

I'll be fine. But the truth is that it's not free and this will only increase an already short on supply/demand for electricity. I, like you I assume, HOPE it works out but given the fact that ships, planes, trains, space rockets, race cars, transportation, production and even our own electricity requires the use of fossil fuels to produce on the mass scales we consume it, I don't think buying and EV is "the change we need to be". I think it's a marketing gimmick. If they gave a shit they could flip the switch in a heartbeat. It took less time to ban whale hunting for blubber to supply our lanterns than it will for the push on EV to "save the earth". But we can all hope, right?

    Holy fucken shit... 80 grand?

Case in point. Doesn't really make sense to pay more to save more... I mean, for the cost of filling up a truck to 200k miles you might pay close to what an EV costs, lol. Especially since it's going to cost another 80k just to maintain it or fix a headlight... or a head unit. How much to replace one of those electric motors? Willing to bet the dealers who sell these are making a KILLING off "extended warranties".

Seems like the rich would be able to afford this push, what about the rest of us? A prius just won't cut it for most.
