Engine light's on but nobody home...

My check engine light just came on today... but I don't see anything wrong. I checked the oil, the coolant, looked around and didn't see anything smoking or hear any funny noises. Could this be an O2 sensor or a "take me in because of the mileage" thing? It actually came on then went out... for a while. Now it's on all the time. I only have about 82500 miles. My Taco is an '04 Extended Cab 2.7 4-wheel drive. Any thoughts? Thanks!

 

take it to autozone and have them hook up a diagnostics reader to it. the code will show on the screen and then they will tell you in words what the code reads and go from there!

Get the code(s) pulled before you start guessing at what's wrong. It's the ONLY way to find out what's wrong.

There is none!

 

Buy a scangauge II and you can use it in the future also..... all sorts of goodies with the scangauge II.

 

X2. You can also use it for codes in other vehicles you or your friends and family might have.

 

It could be anything, the things you are checking / looking for will not necessarily indicate what is actually wrong. It could be a bad sensor or the gas cap could be loose or leaking. The computers nowadays are so good that they can adjust their operation so you'll never "feel" what's wrong because the air/fuel mix is compensating for it but it is destroying your gas mileage or emmissions, for example.
