Yes to q1, no to q2 if you fill/drain a 2nd time with distilled water, which will dilute further that 1.1 qts left in the block. Once you are ready to drain the distilled water, you only need to drain 4.55 qts to top off with concentrated antifreeze and end up with a 50/50 mixture. Easier math is to drain 5 qts, then refill to the top with concentrated antifreeze. That’ll give you a 55/45 mixture.

 

Here are a couple of pictures (found here on TW) showing the DS & PS block drains. The PS is very accessible and I drain that one first.The left side (DS) can be a little tricky to get to, but it can be done. As I've said before, (at least for me) very little coolant drained out. Before I attempted to loosen the block drain bolts I sprayed a little PB Blaster on the bolts.

So you're saying if i flush it twice,on the second time just drain 5 qts and then add pure coolant to the top right?

Not and allen head, I believe it was a 10mm. You'll need a long extension too.

Yes sir, or you can do it after the first flush also. I flush twice to further dilute that quart that remains in the block. Don't you see the math? You have 9.1 qts of distilled water in your system; replace half of it (4.55 qts) with concentrated antifreeze, and you have your 50/50 mixture. Thus, you only need to drain 4.55 qts. Or round up to 5 qts for easier measuring. (A little more antifreeze is better than a little less.)

Hey is there any need to worry about the amount of fluid in the heater core when i flush?I heard it doesn't hold much.Also does it help to remove the thermostat for better flow?

 

It don't hurt to turn it on while the engine is warming up during the flush process.

 

you mean turn the heater on when im running distilled water?Turn it on high,low?What about the thermostat?

 

I believe coolant flows through the heater core at the same rate regardless of fan speed. Replacing the thermostat is not a bad idea. I replaced mine at 100K, and will do so again at 200K. I don't know what the general consensus in TW is, and the service maintenance schedule doesn't address that part specifically. I'm going by what pops told me - it's a relatively cheap part and you already have the cooling system apart. I replaced mine with a MotoRad. Same with the hoses. I replaced them and kept the old ones as backups. Those looked in excellent condition; they may easily go 200K, but I would still recommend replacing them at 100K so you now have some as backups.

Your call.

If you remove the thermostat first, it makes it easier to do two flushes as you don't have to wait for the engine to warm up. However, it takes time to remove it and put the hoses back on to complete the flush cycle(s).

If you leave it in, the flush cycle(s) is/are completed after the engine reaches operating temps and the thermostat opens up to allow the coolant to flow through. Thus, you can complete the flush cycle(s) first before opening up the thermostat housing. However, the coolant will be hot. But, this is how I did it.

I did not. For an old man it's kind of a pain to get to. Instead, I filled and drained twice. Each time I brought the truck up to running temperature before draining. The second time I drained the distilled water was practicaly clear. Each time I drained it included both block drains, the radiator and the coolant reservior. From there I added my new coolant with that handy dandy funnel system I bought from Amazon.

 

I can not seem to find the driver side petcock? i had your pic out there with me and still i can't find it is it pretty much like the other side inline with the tire?Also,did you have the heater on while flushing or just when you added coolant? Also i got that funnel kit as well!

 

I've always disconnected a hose or two and blown compressed air through the system. You would be surprised how much fluid is laying inside the engine and heater core even after the draining has stopped. It's all about gettin it out!
