Anything welding

Anyone have a favorite finish/clear coat for bare metal? Making some shelves I want to look nice for my Mother’s birthday and some weight equipment I don’t care if it’s pretty just needs to last, both that I want to just coat the metal so it doesn’t rust and be done.

 

I use this Evrerbrite clear coating. On our front door and a few metal pieces in the house I coated with the Perma Blue followed by the clear coating and it's held up great. Even the outside of our door which gets plenty of water has been fine after 8 months. Other than this it's all rustoleum primer followed by truck bed coating rattle can but the wife didn't want that all over our door


a friend put the same coating on metal in his front yard and it's also held up great.

 

Thank you! Weight equipment will be in a cold wet garage until we move, didn't want it to rust out week one haha if it did I'd have to cut out a TOYOTA logo for it.

I'll add to this thread about the present build, since its a bigger trailer as I make progress and parts show up.

 

Had time to cut some tailight boxes. Guess who programmed his Gcode start on the outside of the cutout?

It's not a loss. The rubber grommet for the light will cover my error.

Quick (and probably dumb) question for the fabricators out there. I'm looking to make a table to go over the washer/dryer. Trying to make it similar to the dining room table we already have....



2"x1" steel tubing. Looking for the best way to make the joints. I only have a handheld bandsaw and am trying to decide between 2 methods. Butt joint (left) would involve cutting/welding caps over the exposed tube end but also not sure about my ability to cut good 90⁰s on the miter joint (right)...

Did you put it in a 90⁰ clamp/jig or just free hand it?

 

I'd probably go with the 1st one. You grind the weld flat and after paint you won't be able to tell it was not mitered. The open box would be facing the ground.

 

The more I think about it, the more I like this option. Just dawned on me that I could use those plastic plugs. With a plug, the only part of the table touching the ground would be plastic (which would protect the floor).

 

Free handed it mostly. Just put a framing square to make sure it was at 90* and tacked it in place
