    Please help.
I need to replace the cat on my truck, but muffler shops refuse to do the job because the emission label is missing (under the hood). It's a 1997 2.7 engine, 4x4. If anybody has this year and engine, please take a picture of the emission label which is located under the hood. I would really appreciate your help.
I have already tried to order the label from a dealer, but no success since it's been discontinued. I found third party websites that sell emission labels, but you have to be a shop to order it, and they charge a lot for this sticker.
If you can, please take a clear picture of the label so I can print it out and take it to the shop.
    Thank you,

As crazy as it sounds, the under hood emissions label is difficult to get, even on newer vehicles. I purchased one for a F-150 that I used to have, while I was working at the ford dealership. It had a fiberglass hood on it when I bought it, and I traded hoods with someone to get the factory hood back. The problem was that the truck had a 5.4l, but the hood came off of a truck with a 4.6l and the label was on the hood. There were all sorts of hoops to jump through to be able to order it, proof of ownership and everything….and the parts guy knew me.

Besides that, why in the hell a muffler shop needs to see it to replace the converter is beyond my comprehension. Idk what state you live in, but it’s not like that in NC. Every inspection station is required to have one of these books, physical or digital. This should give them all the information that they need. According to this manual the truck calls for one TWC, Three Way Catalyst. That’s one catalytic converter, no air injection system. Any exhaust repair shop should have a universal converter that complies with your old 1997 emission standards on the shelf. I honestly don’t see the problem an exhaust shop would have at all.

I appreciate your help. Is there any chance you can send an entire image of the label so the edges can be seen?

    Thank you very much!

I resent, thats the best I can do, just print as a sticker at a print shop and cut excess off. Fwiw my other taco didnt have the sticker and I just told the guy to put the one in the 01 taco and he did, some shops are picky.

My 2.7 '04 came with the wrong vacuum label from the factory. Not sure how that happened but I'm the original owner and it had never been replaced. I only found out about it after the hood was replaced after a deer collision.

One time the guy at smog station (California) complained that my sticker shows two catalytic converters (TWC + TWC), but the truck had only one.

    upload_2022-2-18_14-27-19.jpg

It is 1995 2.7 - it has EGR but only one cat from the factory. I told him to write a complaint to Toyota because I will not modify factory certified vehicle.

This is the exact reason that the state of North Carolina requires the emissions reference manual that I mentioned and photographed in my previous post, be at every inspection station. As a matter of fact it asks on the inspection certification test where to look for the emissions components that are supposed to be on the vehicle. Both the under hood sticker, and the emissions reference manual are both choices as answers. If you choose the under hood sticker, you got the question wrong. We are taught to ALWAYS go with what the reference manual says over what the sticker underneath the hood states….because the sticker could be so easily changed whether on purpose or after a collision.

California is a bit more f..ed up. For catalytic converter now they have a database which brands and types are allowed in each year. model, engine etc. The muffler shop put the cat based on the printed manual, and I passed the smog for 3 years. On the fourth year smog guy told me, that the cat I have is not in the database, so he has to fail my truck. No way to fight it. Some key pusher did not copy the printed manual to the database correctly. Since California started using the database the printed manual is not honored anymore. I went back to the muffler guy, and he told me, that I am not the first one that got screwed up, but he took it on its own and replaced the cat with the one from the database on his dime. He said, it is easier top replace the cat than fight the state.

Damn it man! It really seems to be a nightmare living there. I know some people that do, and I guess if you keep buying new stuff all the time, it wouldn’t be an issue. Folks like myself that realize they don’t make things like they used to and consider it a personal challenge to see how many miles they can get out of their vehicle, just because…is a dying breed. I don’t want a new vehicle, I don’t care how much fuel it saves. My truck is in fact my hobby. I’ve kept receipts for everything that I’ve ever purchased for this truck including gasoline. The only exception is with the gasoline receipts, I entered them into a computer program and threw them away. The point is that I can tell you with confidence that I have spent 34k dollars in gasoline alone since I purchased my truck in 2011, with 100k miles on it already.

It’s only going to get worse too, especially with all of the electric vehicles hitting the highway. I’ve often wondered about how they pay road tax to drive on the roads. I work for NC dot, and my salary even comes from the gas tax. The gas tax in NC covers everything to keep the roads in good condition, even though I pay the exact same tax when I purchase fuel. That question always comes to mind along with how well the already in place electrical grid is going to hold up when everyone plugs their damn car in…

Thanks for the info, but I forgot to mention I'm in CA, and they use their own after market cats database to comply with the state's regulations. To find a right cat, a muffler shop needs to know your vehicle's engine family number, which is located on the emission label. This number is unique to the year of production and engine size of your vehicle.

So yesterday I cleaned up your picture a bit, put four copies on a letter size page, and my local print shop printed it as a sticker and laminated it for $10. Now I have three spare labels in case I need to replace the hood three more times in the future :) I am also attaching it in case somebody else needs it. Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help!

Well CA is tossing the idea around of a mileage tax for electric vehicles. The technology is already there to validate the mileage since they all have 4G connectivity. The state simply needs to collude with the manufacturers to get real time data of your mileage then they can simply bill you on your annual registration.
