Padlocks that won't corrode or jam up in dusty conditions

Looking for a relatively cheap padlock to lock cases that are going to be attached to a bed rack. Needs to not jam up when exposed to dusty road conditions or corrode when left out in the elements. Would prefer a combo lock, as I have too many keys already for everything else on my rack. However, if a keyed lock is the only solution to not having to get the bolt cutters out later, I'll add another key to the keychain.

Looking for a relatively small lock, that has a shank size in the 3/16" or 6mm size range. Doesn't have to be theft proof, just a visual deterrent of sorts.

Reading way too many reviews on Amazon has left me more confused than when I started. It would appear anything made by Master will corrode, even their all weather locks. Abus seems to be considered a better product, but their website is completely useless for trying to determine what they make and what model number I want. Definitely not interested in any Chinese ripoff locks.

Figured this would be the best place to ask, as it's trail use that can gum up a lock faster than anything, with all the dust, rain and ice one encounters.

 

Cheap and good don’t usually go together. Abloy is a good weather resistant lock.

 

Try marine locks from ABUS.

Also recommend anything from Abus. Their German made locks are the best but won’t be cheap.

Brass one with SS or brass internals. All we use outside at work on our installations and valves. Some have been in use for decades.

 

Pad locks need to exercised. Just sitting there, they will jam up/freeze up. I have 3 on my work truck, two of which open and close every day. The 3rd maybe once a month. That one has more issues jamming up than the other two that get used daily. Does not matter the weather or conditions. Frequent use will keep them in working order.

 

Use Boeing Boe-Sheild T-9 on your locks. It's a deep penetrating dry lubricant that won't attract dust but keeps everything moving freely.

Was originally developed for the landing rams on carrier based aircraft but ai found it to be my go to lube for all kinds of things like suspension uniballs/heims and locks.

I had a door lock that was so stiff it fel like you would snap the key off locking it sprayed a little T-9 in it and ran the key in and out and two days later you could stick the key in the lock and it would just fall open it was so free.

Works great in padlocks left out in the weather.

 

Exactly right, Same as the U.S. Forest Service has used for Many Years. They use Brass Locks.

WD-40 attracts dirt.

 

So does Fluid Film and any other wet coating. What’s your point?

 

I use this on my swingout along with graphite lock spray too keep things moving. Its been outside for years in mud/snow/dirt/rain and still works fine

Put a ziploc bag over the lock with rubber band

 

The OP said he was going to be in Dusty Conditions.

 

Keep in mind the following.....Good-Fast-Cheap. Choose 2, the third is excluded.

3/16" shank......isn't much of a theft deterrent. Might be just as well off using a 3/16" grade 8 bolt with tamper resistant features.
