Oh. Some call it snake oil and others call it a good product. It supposedly helps break down deposits in your engine whether its put in your fuel or your crankcase. It also can be used as a fuel stabilizer.

Ya it's not totally needed. I've used it in my small engines to "clean out" the carbs and some in tank filters. It seemed to help my leaf blower run better.

I like steak medium rare and do not prime my filter because it’s upside down on a 1GRFE and would spill making a mess
On previous vehicles with a metal canister facing up I would because it’s not hard

OP I don’t know if you realize this but
most vehicles nowadays use a paper or fleece filter facing downwards that cannot be primed. Professional automotive technicians with years of specialized training and knowledge cannot and do not prime them, all over the world. Nor are there any consequence.

12 months from the date you work on a car, if there is an issue found that you caused, it’s called a Comeback. There are no comebacks for unprimed oil filters.

you can also prime a very dry engine after a rebuild in other ways including disabling fuel which takes extra time consuming steps. Nobody is going to do this for an oil change.

oil is high quality enough to cling to metal surfaces after sitting, and takes mere seconds to fill a filter when it is pumped.

it is possible that you may have worked on a vehicle 10 years ago and see it still in service today. Without having had the filter primed.

    it’s not that important

12 months seems excessive to me, but it all depends on what the job was, and what exactly caused the failure again. It’s more like 90 days here in NC, a lot can happen in a year. I’ve not had many comebacks in my career, but I have had some. I’ve made mistakes before, anyone who hasn’t, obviously hasn’t done a damn thing.

How in the hell could anyone prove that not priming an oil filter will, or will not make a difference? There’s too many variables at play in my opinion to come to any conclusion.

Speaking of comebacks, and the total loss of direction of this thread, I’m reminded of one that scared me pretty bad. I was working at a ford dealership and the sales department wanted me to do a pre delivery inspection on a trade in F-150 that they had another customer ready to purchase. Like all the other vehicles, I made a list of everything it needed, priced parts, priced my own labor hours and gave the work order to the service writer to get the ok to proceed. The truck needed a lot of things, including brakes all the way around. The sales department, in their normal fashion only approved the oil change, and that’s all I did, then sent it to the detail guys. Two days went by and I noticed a truck coming in the dealership on a rollback that had an engine fire. It wasn’t completely burned, but enough to be a total loss. Of course it was the F-150 we just sold them and everyone was pointing their finger at me, saying I had missed something that caused it to catch on fire. I got the worst feeling in my chest….but I kept my cool and went to look at the truck after it was unloaded. Took me less than 60 seconds to point out the cause of the fire, and clear my name at the same time. The truck had new brake pads all the way around, and whoever installed them put a handful of shop rags under the master cylinder to catch the brake fluid overflow, left them there soaked in brake fluid, and touching the exhaust manifold.
Holy smokes I felt like a damn crime scene investigation expert! Lmao, I was just relieved to see it wasn’t my fault, still scared me though.
