    Hi everyone!

    I'll give the cliff notes.
    • 04, Double Cab, V6, 2WD
    • My blinkers and part of my dashboard stopped working
    • Mechanic says Junction Box went out, need replacement
    • The junction box for 04 Tacoma is no longer manufactured, and I cannot find a replacement

Does anyone know where I can find/buy a replacement junction box? I need your help.

    First off, Welcome to TacomaWorld.

Second, did you confirm the diagnosis? Checked out your turn signal fuse and other fuses? How well do you know this shop/mechanic?

That part# while showing as discontinued is $$$$ as in a few thousand dollars when it was available.

    Suggest checking the following fuses:

I know this mechanic pretty well, as I have gone to him for years. Electrical stuff isn't my thing, so I have to trust others' words on it.

However, you're brought up some great ideas, and possible solutions. I'll check the fuses and go from there. Thank you, and thanks for the pictures.

I had an issue with a rear turn signal LED (yeah, no more LEDs for me) nearly imploding and starting a fire. Fortunately, I was down the street from home and checked it immediately. One of the symptoms - yep, signals not working and dash lights freaking out.

Our trucks are very straight forward and also very forgiving when it comes to working on them. The issues you're describing are fairly basic to troubleshoot. Inside the engine bay fusebox is a fuse puller (inside of lid). Use that to make it easy to grab the fuses out and then hold up to the light. If there is a break, the fuse has blown and you'll need to replace it. That square one marked Tail in my second pic is a relay. That one you'll need to head over to your fave auto parts store to replace if its fried. They should have it in stock.

Go to a different mechanic. The cowl wire is the main wire harness that supports all of the functions inside the dash. You would have to remove the dash and most parts in behind the dash to replace the cowl wire.

Before even considering that level of repair: get at least 3 opinions; someone should show you the damage; consider having the damaged area of your wire repaired or by-passed; try to source a used replacement, if that is required, from somewhere like car-part.com.

For your relay box to be damaged beyond repair, I would highly suspect you'd have smelled wire burning type smell unless it was damaged(broken) by some failed repair attempt, or impact. Even if someone broke the plastic housing, that could be repaired for way less than replacing the cowl wire.

Try to get a picture, or at least a better description of what the exact damage is and get back with us.

Unless it’s on fire, it’s pretty hard for a junction box to go bad. I suspect there’s something with those circuits, if I get time later I’ll dig up a schematic.

Is it possible your using the wrong term

Sounds to me like a mechanic either does not want the job or is clueless and guessing.

If that is the case did the Fire department respond to keep the fire from spreading from the burning Truck?

I checked out all the fuses that you asked me to check and all of them are fine. I'll try to get a second opinion this week and I'll let you know how it goes.

Update: I went to another mechanic for a second opinion. Only told the mechanic about the blinkers and the dashboard. The mechanic did a diagnostic check and concluded it was the junction box.... yay

Buying the part myself, and getting it installed as soon as it arrives

Please post pictures of your old junction box after it is removed.

    Good Luck

Another Update: Found the part online, but out of stock on every website, even those that claim they have one in stock. Looking into buying the part used, but it will take some time.

Final update: Could not locate the part I need, and truck is now overheating when I drive it. Safe to say that it is on its last stretch before it enters Valhalla.
I'm trading it in for a new Tacoma in April.

227,000 miles, and I've kept her in good condition until now. It'll break my heart to lose her, but I must do what is necessary.

Thank you guys for sticking with me through this journey, and thank you for the help/advice. I'll see you on the other side.
