Rear Diff Lock Light? (on always?) 2004

Hi,

I just purchased a Tacoma with the factory rear-differential feature.

I have a question for those who know... is the switch supposed to have a light within it tinted orange? and is it supposed to be "on" all the time? My switch is to the left of my steering wheel and appears to be lit up orange all the time. When I press the button in, it makes the usual engaging sound, and appears to function, but even after I turn it back off, the little orange-ness of the switch never goes away (even when the car is turned totally off).

I guess what I am saying is, I am trying to figure out if there is a malfunction or if it's (the switch's light) supposed to be on all the time.

i think it always has that kinda orange tint to it. when you engage the rear locker...lights in the dash come on(abs light and locker light).

 

i think he was saying even if the truck is off the light stays on? thats not good obviously if thats what ur sayin...

 

No it shouldnt be on all the time only when engaged along with the lights on the gauges. Id take back to where you bought it and complain.

 

sorry.........what i meant was.....when the truck is on, and you turn your lights on.....the switch will be lit up/glowing all the time. the lights in the dash will come on for the diff lock....abs light will come on or flash....cant remember which when you engage the locker.

op, imho, if your diff lock and abs dummy lights (in gauge cluster) aren't lit up, i wouldn't worry about it.

another way to tell if something is screwed up, is to keep the diff lock OFF, drive around a corner on pavement, and feel/listen for any wheel hop/squealing. if none, it's likely that your lock isn't engaged.

I am quite sure the locker is -not- turned on. But I am concerned this little light is drawing power unnecessarily when the truck is shut down. I don't want it to ruin my battery.

The locker indicator turns on inside the cluster (as normal) when it is engaged and I hear it activated.

The switch (orange tint) was more my concern. Thanks.

 

yeah thats a legit concern. any load is a draw on ur battery. granted that little bulb isnt a big load, but it still should'nt be like that.

 

yeah, that's weird...but i doubt the draw would be enough to drain your battery. like lotsoftoys said, that's a legit concern nonetheless.

you could always remove the button's light.
