Just recently (re?) joined the site and have been poking around. Found this thread...wish I had seen it sooner. Spent a lot of time on the pipeline a long time ago. Familiar with the area...Butler Rock, Shay Lake, Crooked Lake, Old 64 (aka 2308), Violet Rd, Twin Pine Rd, Jack Pine Rd. My parents had a place on the Oconto not too far from Robinhorst Rd. This was 40 years ago. The pipeline was shut down to offroading due to some of the stupid, guys tearing the shit out of everything, nearly damaging the pipeline. Don't know how long ago that changed, I know one of the guys I hung out with back then was very involved with getting trails established and trying to open up the pipeline area again but I haven't seen him in a bunch of years.

    Welcome back!

I know that in 1993 a bunch of local off-road clubs got together and built bridges over two streams that were getting stirred up due to 4×4's crossing them. This kept the Pipeline open for awhile.

Now, it's still open in bits and pieces between areas that are closed. And, in the few years I've been visiting, some areas have been temporarily closed due to storm damage, and possibly other reasons. FR55552 is also closed from March 14 - June 1 every year. And, many of the roads up there are seasonal.

Feel free to join us for a trail run this summer!

We usually turned around just south of Crooked Lake unless the summer was really dry, in those days it was nearly impassable, even bikes had a hard time getting through. One of the guys got so stuck one weekend, we left the truck there overnight and spent 5 hours the next day getting him back out. At one point, we had 3 trucks chained together! Such fun!

I will keep an eye on this thread, can't guarantee anything as I spend a lot of my weekends on my motorcycle but who knows?

I can see some massive mudpits on Google Maps! There's a spot I won't attempt over near Jack Pine Road.

We do trail days and parking lot parties all summer. Maybe we'll see you at one!

The ice took a helluva beating with all of the wind all weekend and the temps today. There was a pretty steady stream of shanties coming off the ice.

Isn't it amazing how much the wind effects ice?

You would think a sheet of ice couldn't be grabbed by wind.
