TPMS Coding - A Unique Scenario

I have somewhat of a unique situation and I could use a little help. I have a 2007 Tacoma and recently I acquired used 2018 Tacoma wheels (p/n 4261104170) with 4 factory TPMS. I need to purchase a 5th TPMS for the spare tire.

• Can I purchase and after market TPMS (much cheaper than Toyota) and can it and the 4 newer 2018 TPMS be programmed to my truck? Does it matter which frequency?
• Should I just replace all 5 TPMS with the same aftermarket sensors and then program them to the truck?
• Or, do I need to purchase a Toyota brand TPMS for the spare tire?

Trying to find the most cost effective way to do this and really appreciate the wisdom of this community. Thanks.

 

The 3rd gen and 2nd gen tpms have different frequencies so you would need new sensors. What I did when I acquired 3rd gen wheels for my 13 was purchased 4 denso sensors from the rock then programmed them to the truck. If u have a sensor in ur spare and its from 07 u may as well buy 5 new sensors that way ur golden for ~10 years. The rock sells denso for $36 be sure to get the proper one for alloys. I question whether you need that. My 2010 does NOT have a TPMS in the spare. Your 2007 might not have the receiver to handle 5 sensors.

 

The early gen 2 had one in the spare. Not sure what year they dropped it.

 

My 2008 has a tpms in the spare, Ive got both Autel and Denso sensors.

 

Thanks for all the quick replies. I do have a sensor in the spare and when I swapped the new tires on I was hopeful those sensors would work. However, I believe Steelcity2 is correct so that will be that route. Here is a pic. I've made a few mods: upgraded stereo, hood struts, Bilstein 5100 (when the frame was replaced - thanks Toyota), Satoshi Grill (by Homer's Grills), OEM LED tail lights, headlight cable upgrade, etc. The truck has 155K miles and it's barely needed anything besides the expected wear items.

I believe 2009 is when they stopped with the TPMS in the spare, mine does not have one on the spare...BTW, I went aftermarket on new TPMS sensors, about $50 or less for all 4 of them. Work like a charm, Discount/America's Tire installed and programmed for free with my recent tire purchase....

 

Here you go. Save a little cash buy buying the 4 pack. These will fit your 2007.

Then you'll need one more for the spare on a 2007.

This is exactly what I did for my 2007 a year ago. My old sensors were still working, but I was buying new tires and knew the 14 year old sensors would die before wearing out the new tires. Discount Tire mounted and programed them at no additional cost.

I did need to pick up another spare since I still had the original 14 year old tire under the truck. I went to a small independent shop and picked up a 3 year old used tire for $20 to use as a spare.

 

My 2011 TRD Off road access cab has a tpms in the spare I replaced all mine with Toyota sensors for 60 bucks apiece and they all work great.

 

The 2018 Toyota charcoal alloy spare and the original steel spare wheels did not have TPMS sensors, just the rubber valve stems. The TPMS sensors for the new Gen3 alloys wrere purchased from an eBay Motors store, as were the wheels and black OEM lug nuts, total for the entire kit $772.69 (including sales taxes and shipping).
My Costco Tire friends installed the new wheels as a "winter tire swap" at $49.96 (8 wheels/4 tires vs. 8 tires/4 wheels same-same). The TPMS were programmed by the seller for 2008-2012 Tacoma OBDII, and Mike went around the truck twice and reported they all read into the system. I'm pleased with the new look. The spare is tucked up under the bed, and I usually exercise the crank hoist mechanism annually so plan to check air pressure at that time. (I discovered with my new 1984 Longbed Deluxe that the chain hoist did need to be exercised with the first time I got it unstuck. The much newer truck uses a wire rope hoist.)
